In max 5.1 while applying a UV map to an object I am setting a planer map with a height and width of 4000 x 4000. Here's the problem I am getting a box that is not a perfect square it is certainly more like a rectangle then it is even close to being a square. This may be something small but I can't find the solution anywhere, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Go to the uv modifier and there should be a button that says fit. If that doesn't work, or you've already tried it make sure that your xyz direction is set to the right axis.

thanks coffeepenguine

tried to fit also played with the axis's any other hints that you can think of? It's a no go.

I'm telling you I've never seen this before and its extremely irratating.

The only other two things I can think of are:
1. Make sure the orientation of the uv map and the plane are aligned.
2. Make sure that the pollys that are getting uv mapped are selected.
Also can you attach a screen capture of the problem?

The odd thing is I never remember using the 'FIT' feature, except when followin a tutorial once.

BTW, anyone know a shortcut in uv editor to make the rotate tool jump in 90 Deg increments?

Gizmos often are distorted if the object has been non-uniformly scaled at some point. Go to the Utilities panel and use Reset Xform on your object, then collapse the stack and re-apply your UVW Mapping mod. Should be OK then.

Oh yeah, The Writer... there are two 90-degree rotation presets, Rotate +90 and Rotate -90, in the bottom right of the Edit UVWs window.
