View Full Version : Edge Loop and Edge Ring .. Litle help !
loki1_11 08-13-2003, 06:08 PM Hello Guys !!!
at first I want to say that I'm new here at cgtalk :)
So Hello again ! :)
I'm a newby in terms of humans modeling so I want to know if someone here can explain me how should I use edge loops and edge rings in cinema 4d cuse I just dont understand how it works and how is it used ... I already tryed to use the edge loop and the edge ring tool but I just see an selection .. is it right ? how can I use this tools ? and when ?
Thanks guys :)

Edge loops and edge ring are two selection tools.
I know edge loops is very useful for controlling loops in head meshes but I rarely use it as I am not such a good head modeler. Edge ring is incredibly useful because in conjunction with edge cut you can add detail where you want avoiding the creation of unwanted triangles. In other words you first select some edges with edge ring and then use edge cut to add additional edge row.
(What a terrible explanation :surprised )
Hope you can understand something.
Bye! :)

edge loops and rings just produce selections of edges, the point being that it's what you do with the selection once you've got it, for instance to add in more loops you would make an edge ring selection, then use the edge cut tool. or you could make an edge loop selection and bevel or extrude to add in loops or smooth/chamfer areas of the mesh.

Oh .. I see it .. its usefull this tools :)
Thanks guys !
One more thing How can I model the loops for an human head ?
cuse I alredy saw in many places that u need to model the loops for an easy and correct deformation of your character !
But I dont know how to model this edges .. so can someone helps me with that ?
Sorry to ask to many questions :)
Thanks a lot !

Hi Loki,
Edge ring and edge loop are really useful. The first
thing is to develope an understanding of the topology
of the human head or what ever you want to model.
Perfect examples for edge loops are the areas around
eyes and mouth. Also cylindrical form are perfect for
edge loops - for example a leg or finger. Lets asume
you want to exaggerate or move the joint of a finger
then you select one edge of the loop use the Edge Loop
tool and already you can move or scale the whole joint.
Thats a very small and raw description of using edgeloops.
You could write whole books about this topic. Make a
internet search and you will find many useful hints and tutorials.

btw does anybody have any pics/images of good edge loops for the torso of a human...man or woman would be really interested in any you may have.
thanks guys.

I'm trying to understand how can I do that :)

pictures? Why. Use Otto within Cinema 4D. Very clean and good edge loops in all areas.

The model in the pic you posted is made with
an app that supports n-sided polys ( poly with
more than 4 edges ). That is great advantage
hope that C4D will support that in future releases.
I think its modeled with the "smoothed cube"
method which means you start with a cube smooth
it and subdivide the areas that need a higher resolution.
If you get the raw shape you search for loop areas
and delete and connect the points to make the loop.
Its a bit hard to explain. Its also a question of practise.
After some heads you get an eye for such things.
I remember my first head - brrh, shudder :)
I play with the thought to make a tutorial myself.
We will see :)

really low detail loops for a whole body, no tri's (save one in each foot, couldfix that but they aren't in an area of concern or bad deformation)

Can't take full credit, this is heavily influenced by Bay Rait's topology (a little cleaner quad mesh, no ngons)used for the defualt human rig in mirai.
