View Full Version : Set prefered angle
thebrianproject 10-15-2009, 06:07 PM I've been using maya for a while, and every once in a while I will RMB over a mesh, and if there is a joint under the cursor the marking menu will bring up an option that says "SET PREFFERED ANGLE"
I have no idea what this does, and I was wondering if someone out there could hit me with some knowledge.

Well i think u use it to save the skeleton/joint current pose(rotation).
If u then rotate it and want to recall to the original position u use assume.

Set Prefered angle is what you need to do if you say made an arm or leg and it was perfectly straight from shoulder to wrist. If you applied an IK to it the IK would not know what direction to bend it in and would behave weird or remain stiff. To set the prefered angle in that situation you first bend the joint in the prefered angle direction. Right click to set the prefered angle then remove the rotation back to the default pose.
You are basicly saying when you bend I want you to bend like this.

I think the reason that this comes up is because joints have a higher "ranking" than polygons and nurbs and subdvis when the user selects over an area. IK handles is the highest i think ... and Set pref angle is one of the RMB options for joints
