ive got a slight problem, i dont know how to reset the orientation of vertices in an object i have. Its like when i drag a couple of vertices they all move in different directions. any help? im guessing its a silly question but i just got frustrated.

I suppose you have switched accidentally your coordinate system to Local. This causes your vertices to move same direction from every vertex point's local coordinate system.

Type to Help(F1): coordinate system

And change your coordinate system for now to: View

This should fix the problem.

as far as i know vertex normals depend on the surrounding faces, so on a non planar surface the vertex normals _will_ be different.

if you want them to move all in one direction (that of all the normals averaged) play around with the "use pivot center button" on the main toolbar and the reference coordinate system list right next to it, should be self-explanatory.
