View Full Version : Character Rigging for Fighting
peaxio 10-15-2009, 04:55 AM Does anybody know of a tutorial (book, website, dvd, etc...) of how to rig a character for fighting? Such as Tekken, Soul Calibur, or Dead or Alive? Or can any rig be used for something like this? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

really really depends on the fidelity you want, how are the looking aesthetically?, what kind of motions will they do. etc ,etc..

Well... I guess I should've mentioned, I'll be rigging in Maya. As for what they look like? Here is a post for a character I'm still working on. It is a low poly character among several others. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=6130414&postcount=9
They'll be doing lots of motions, from punches to high kicks, and jumping and handsprings. There is going to be plenty of arms up over the head too, so I've modeled her in the T-pose because I figure I would need that full range of motion. I've done some early skinning tests, so all should be good for now. I want to get to the rig first before I start the texturing and test all my deformations for the right amount of edge loops and topology in case I need to edit the mesh before I start the final skinning. Lemme know if you need more info. And lemme know if my edge loops are decent for those high kicks and stuff. Any references to pics of wireframes or of anything will be of great help. Thanks a bunch!! :D

i think that u can find a book or tutorial for a fighter but you can find a lot of stuff for make a human rigging.
If the rigging is good your char should be able to make all the movement that you need .
This for a basic rig after that if u need you can squash stratch or muscle or cloth hair simulation etc etc etc but only if u need and this is for advance rigging.
However for general human rigging you can find a very good videotutorial on Digitaltutors or Gnomon .

Your question is pretty broad and generic. As eek pointed out it really depends on what you're looking for. I've never used a rig that was "customized for fighting" or customized for anything really. A good rig is a good rig, and it's up to the animator to make the fight animation believable

That's what I was wondering, if any kind of rig would work... unless there was a more specific rig for this kind of thing. Right now I have an old Maya 5 book on character rigging and animation, and a digital tutors on character setup and rigging. I'll look into those and others to see what I can come up with... Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks peeps!
