View Full Version : graphic card [mac]
nataz 08-13-2003, 02:14 PM hi there, i wish you could give me some advice on the optimum graphic card for my mac (g4/400/>700mb ram) as i think my standard ATI rage pro is now really sluggish with radiosity & hdri...
Any suggestion welcome.
thanx for your help

A graphics card won't make any difference on a 400MHz machine of any sort, it would just be throwing away your money.
Keep saving a for a new machine is about the best I could say.

Hi nataz - as well as the advice from Mash, which is correct, you should also be aware that the graphics card has nothing to do with radiosity or HDR rendering, it just handles the editor view as you are modelling etc.

thanx a lot.
so i have to check for a dual g5... my bank account will go :surprised ...
about dual g5: would it make a real difference or should i consider buying a PC just for the 3D purpose?

I've heard that C4D is faster under windows, ( mash is this true, I think it was you that posted that once but I'm not sure )

I have a G4 400 mhz (which is due for a processor upgrade), and I stuck a Radeon 8500 in.
Doesn't help rendering but it does speed up the display, especially working with complex meshes.
However, I did crossgrade my C4D licence to PC as my PCs were waaay faster at the time.
You could pick up a Radeon 8500 quite cheap now < $100.

As i have i licence for net.rendering i think it may be usefull to have just a pc running in the backyard to render my stuff... and keep my g4 for the modelling as i'm usually working with low polys meshes (well if something like 25'000 is low)
but the radeon 8500 is a rich idea; thanx!

Look, then decide for yourself.
Ya 2x faster is about right :)
Mash - will Maxon also be optimizing C4D for the 970?...,its optimized for Pentium and AMD isnt it?

Well, what i don't understand yet regarding this graphic cards is all that story about some of them that have "integrated shaders"; if it doesn't help with rendering what is the point then?
They integrate shaders just for working preview? It seems more complicated than that :surprised

you mean like vertex shaders and pixel shaders?
as far as I know c4d makes little use of these features
these are explained a little here

i think that's it; so i understand it is mostly for preview purpose.
thanx for the link
