Hi

I was thinking about getting the student offer by render rocket http://www.renderrocket.com/educational.aspx . Unlimited use of their farm for rendering with 3dsmax scanline renderer, sounds pretty cool. I am only worried about the low-priority part of the deal. They are very vague on their website: Turn-around time can vary greatly as available processors are first given to priority on-demand users, then shared with other unlimited users.

Does anyone have experience with render rocket? What am I to expect for turn-around times? Will it be a matter of hours, days or weeks? And how robust is the renderfarm in general?

bye David

That could be a great deal or a horrible deal. It depends on how many nodes their farm has. If they have hundreds or thousands then there's a good chance that many of the machines will be idle early in the morning and other off peak times. If they have say 50 machines there's a good chance the farm will always be busy. Also consider the bandwidth needed for something like that. When I was in the dorms it was hard to watch YouTube without it stopping to buffer.

Over a four year degree that'd be about $1980 for their rendering service. If it actually works that's a good deal. If stuff takes weeks to render and your projects are always late then its a waste and that money could go into building your own render nodes. Cheers!
