Hello:

I just saw this really great image of Napoleon on CGSociety and the creators used 3DS Max and Vray exclusively ... with, of course, some Photoshop.

Naturally, and I say this is a good way, I was frustrated. I have searched high and low for a quality tutorial on creating realistic skin in 3DS Max without success. Either I get partial instructions or broken links.

I've seen the tutorial on Russell Crowe (fabulous, by the way).... but the creator used Mental Ray.

I've downloaded the cool two-page full-color spread on achieving perfect skin without shaders.

I've poured through the plentiful Maya Workshops on the use of Mental Ray and tried to reverse and adapt for Vray and Max.

I've followed the links to Skin Tutorials for Max that don't give the greatest of tutorials. Let's face it, as talented as some people are, not everyone should be teaching or writing a tutorial.

I'm begging someone ... somebody ... ANYBODY ... if you could please break down realistic skin texturing for 3ds max and Vray.

Here's what I already know:

1) It's all about layering
2) SSS is an important ingredient, but everyone is talking about SSS2 whilst I see I'm with SSS Fast.

Here's the added bonus request: How about a tutorial on black, brown or darker skin texture as well. Plenty of general pink flesh tones ... you would think the process would almost be the same, but ethnic skin tone application can really look terrible if not done right.

So I'm appealing the pros who post up nicely on the featured art forums. You guys who do the skin tones effortlessly and on the weekends (lol).

I'd appreciate it greatly.
