Hi everyone, here's a concept I'm working on. I'm going to render it into a full completed piece so any advice along the way would be great :)

Latest Update:

Awesome work, wouldn't dare to critique one single part of it ;)

Not bad, I would love to see the finishing. In color probably. Overall looks like Zbrush sculpt because of the fine edges. Lets see your progress. God Speed~!!

nice clean image, though i might be wrong but the head may seem a little large?

good start.

Hi

I like the design, but I think your proportions are off. I found a sample pic from the site below that looks about the right pose, so you can check how close you are:

Hope that helps

Update:
http://i340.photobucket.com/albums/o343/Algorithmic/3-1.png

Thanks for the critique and kind works guys, especially about the proportions, thanks DArcy1. I ended up measuring out all his limbs etc, and I compared the sizes to Vitruvian Man proportions (about 7.5 heads tall). I found that his head should be smaller (nice catch lightcache, thanks), his arms needed to be shorter, his knees needed to be lower, and his crotch needed to be higher (plus a bunch of other tweaks...).
Anyway, I think I've gotten most of it down proportion wise according to my ruler, although it's a bit hard to measure accurately since his suit is really thick and dis-aligned with his body in certain places like his shoulders and helmet so in accordance with the style and design I'm going after I'll leave those relatively untouched besides the aforementioned changes in size.
Again, thanks for the replies, if you can think of anything else feel free to post.

Update(sorta): fixed some anatomy issues, modified the right elbow, messing around a bit with colors, etc. I doubt I'll keep it like this though, need to work more on my color palate before I do too much more in gray scale.

You know, I love those color swirls ! Looks like he is confident, strong, standing in the middle of a storm (of magic?, of flying creatures?).

Cheers

Thanks DArcy1, I'll probably add something like that to whatever concept I end up going with, not sure what it'll be though.

UPDATE:
sorry for the long absence everyone, my hard drive decided to stop working on me :banghead: so It's been awhile since I could use photo shop until I could set up a new drive. Luckily I have all of my art files backed up so I didn't loose anything.

Anyway, here is a new concept I'm thinking about. I always wanted to draw a lava planet haha. Any feedback or ideas would be cool as always.

I think character could be 1 head taller. It's about 7 heads tall now

Or the head could be a bit smaller...

Here's a picture of him taller, thanks for the suggestion wo0lF I think he does look better with the added height. but I don't think I'll make the head any smaller or it's going to start looking ridiculous. I also turned down the characters opacity and drew a really quick sketch of what he would look like underneath his suit just to show you guys how thick the suit is in some areas. Hopefully that looks a bit better.

I think the problem is the "conehead" effect of how the shoulder armour just rounds up into the helmet, combined with the stuff that looks like hair but I assume is armour. The helmet sits a bit too high on his head as well. I did a quick paintover to interrupt the lines of the shoulder just a bit and lowered his helmet - it may help.

Thanks DArcy1, I charged his shoulders a bit around his neck and made the helmet smaller so hopefully it looks better now.

Update: I made a few changes to the design and gave him a cape, now I just need to figure out if I should use that larger lava planet background or keep the focus on him with a smaller piece.

Update: couldn't get the cape to look quite right, so I took a more rigid approach. Also redid a lot of the highlights, shadows, etc.

Good choice! Your armour is so delightfully angular, a soft cape would just be distracting. Having said that, I'm not sold on the fuzzy edges of the wing-things...although, if they were extendable artificial wings (with metal feathers?), it would be pretty cool to see him in both standing and flying versions with the wings extended :-)

Thanks DArcy1 :)
Actually I was moving more towards "segmented armor" than actual wings, I tried a few bigger more wing like versions but they didn't fit too well overall and gave him a bit of a balance issue.

Update:
I still need to put something in his hand (the one in his shadow) to balance him out a bit more, perhaps some type of archer's bow, or maybe I'll have him crush an army rifle with that hand... Anyway, still conceptualizing backgrounds and color schemes, so once I settle on one it should move forward quicker. Hope you guys like it, feedback is appreciated.
