I've just recently graduated from AI-CDIS. This is my Demo Reel Entitled "Backyard Bully"
Backyard Bully is an embellished story about me playing in my backyard as kid.
Everything on the reel was made by me except the bear model.
The audio was by Adrienne Shmidt.
The short can be viewed at www.darrenrudy.com
Or, there are some direct links below.

Wow. Lovely stuff! The quality of the rendering is beautiful, and the characters move very nicely. The squirrel's weight doesn't quite work when he is pulling himself out of the ground, but that's a very minor point. Nice movement in the tail. The flashback is dare I say it a little cheesy, but you pull it off. Good job
I hope that you get a kick ass sound designer to assist with the soundtrack, because this certainly deserves one - it does detract a little from the piece without it for me, but shouldn't present a problem when sending off your reel because as industry are always fond of telling us, they watch it with the sound off anyway...

Forgot to mention how impressed I am that you've managed this at 20 years old. That's a nice headstart mate.

Hey Rudity, I think this stuff is great for your first reel. A couple crits though....
If you want the squirel to be really snappy, you need to take out all that slow anticipation. When ever he snaps somewhere, he antics back really slow. They don't work together. If you look at scrat(which I'm sure you studied for your character), his anitics(if he ever has any) are very very quick, and more felt than seen. I also think that after he does his snappy turns, like in the begining, he takes too much time to slow out of them. If you want a snappy character, I feel that he needs to be snappy the whole way through, not slow antic, snappy move, and then slow ease out. The fall through the tree was great, really made me laugh. Good weight and timing there. As far as crossbow man, I think that last clip was your weakest. There were a lot of frozen holds, so he popped in and out of movement, and the action of reloading was pretty sloppy too. I'd axe that. Remember, you're only as good as your worst clip. Hope this helps, keep it up.

Babyhopper - Thank you very much for your critiques. They've already got me thinking. I'll definetly remember some of the stuff you told me the next time im animating.
O, I also checked out your website, and returned the favor by watching your demo reel. The first clip was, just awesome. It inspired me. Thanks again for the critiques.

Thanks guys.
The song at the end of the credits is Dashboard Confessional - Screaming Infidelities.
Yup I spent alot of time on the burnaby campus, and living around there in general. Nice area. Now I'm living downtown Vancouver, and man its a nice place. Rent is a bit more expensive but I can always just walk down a few streets dropping resume's at shops and restaurants when I'm not CG'ing it. I'm good for 5 months though :)
See ya guys around.

All hail Mr Rudy, King Of Squirrels!
Congrats on getting this finished, dood. You already know that I think it's awesome, but I still would have liked to see an alternate ending where the kitty and squirrel become romantically involved. I'd call it : Backside Bully. :D
Hey can I spill the beans about your new you-know-what, or should I let you do that...
psssst.... darren's got a job! woohoo!
you know dan......this thing you have with cg characters doing it is only spurring me to ....
make models of you and Rudity so you guys can "get romanticaly involved" as you put it.....
hay do I hear new demo. I think I do.
way to go on the getting work Rudity. glad to hear it.
though I'm going to kill you.

The animation where the guy eats the scared nuts is pretty weak and the voice of the guy is so hard to understand. Did you do the voice?
The cat test is nice. I would have liked to see the cat more animated in the actual film.
The actual story is quite good, but the sound kills it. Something that I found annoying is the head turns while he peaks out form the grass. I think they are too slow, but in later animation its gets snappy. So its conflicting as character animation.
When the kitty lands on the ball, it just pops frozen for afew frames. No squash, or OL action.
It looks to me like you concentrated on the main character for animation.
Were you inspired by "Gone Nutty" Blue Sky Studios by any chance.

Nice stuff. Heh. the flashback was the best part. I saw no huge problems with animation, which was obviously your focus. Very Blue Sky indeed. Im trying to get people to realize that the "Skrat falling down the hillside" shot sequence is overused, but its always such a dynamic and funny solution.

wow, i loved that. i wanted to make a short too, it just seems that the learning curve for animation in 3dsmax / maya is fairly high. i can model things okay, but making it come alive is another :P
