I dont know where this would fall in category but i was hoping if somebody knew how to do this effect in maya http://footage.shutterstock.com/clip-95512-gradually-drawn-by-volume-building.html please help. im trying to do this with paint effect flow animation technique but its very inefficient and you have to deal with a lot of curves since i made my toon into a curve and made that into a path where my paint effect would run. although i know that the toon is actually a paint effect but i couldnt find a way to preserve it as a toon and create the animated lines. hope some one could help. thanks in advance.

I've never done something like this before but I do have an idea of what you can do. First you can use the contour shader to get a wireframe render of a polygonal model. I'd imagine it would be much easier to do this with polygons than curves. Then you could use a "mask object" which would basically be a sphere, cube or any custom shape that you could move scale or deform to hide or unhide the geometry you want.

It almost looks like it could be done with camera clipping.
