View Full Version : Need help making strong shadows
Girn26 08-12-2003, 10:27 PM I want to make strong shadows, like you would see on the side of a tank with sun shining on it. Because in brazil or max render. It always makes soft shadows. and I want the real life hard shadows. I know you have to use omni or someting. But I dont know what setting it is. Any help will be appreciated.

Go to your Light Parameter, scroll down to Shadow Parameter then increase the Density, the default is 1.0 :), how about 300 ?

If by hard shadows you want a hard edge on your shadows you'll have to use a raytrace light instead of a light that usses shadow mapping. Also when you render, if your doing a still, set the anti alising (I think) to catmull-rom and the edges should look better.

can you please be more specific about this raytrace light and stuff. And yes, I want the hard shadows.

Go to Help > user reference > go to "search" tab
then enter "shadow"
Tons of lightings & shadows explanation there, ie :
- ray traced shadows
- advanced ray traced shadows
- shadow map
- general light parameter
- working with lights
- etc

Select your light and go to the modify tab. There should be a pull down menu that says shadow map. Click on it and change it to ray trace.

Yeah, and I'm sorry to say so, but when your finished with this it may help you a great deal to read the online manual on these areas i.e.
lights
shadow maps
raytraced shadows
then also, if you have not done so, go through the provided tutorials and then the rest of the manual as needed.
Cheers
