View Full Version : online file storage?

I have two computers--one for graphics and one for regular stuff and as file storage--it gets a nightly backup.
Trouble is, this storage computer has been breaking down since I got it built(one reason I will not use a relative to build one for me again). Thunderbird or windows gets corrupted-and my builder is blaming the 40 foot cable I have, even though I havent moved the computer around for months. I am also skeptical because his suggested solution to a dust problem involved removing all furniture from the basement and not using any filters on the machine-which is full of vent holes. Since I started using filters, the machine has little dust in it.

So--I am wondering if I can get an online file storage that lets me access that for both computers instead of having it based in the machine--or is it not worth the trouble(security etc) and my real problem is an unusually problematic computer build(er)?
If its the extension cable, please explain how it would cause a particular software to malfunction(since it is connected to both machines-I use RDP for the storage one-and the graphics one isnt giving me any trouble).

The problem started with thunderbird unexpectedly crashing and me having to relog in to the RDP or reboot the computer. Finally I get some message that says windows needs to be reinstalled from the disk. but in the past when that was tried, it may work ok for a few days and then start to crash again-gaining in frequency of crashes until the machine is completely kaput and an windows error is among the last messages displayed.

What extension cable? power, netwrok, phoneline, audio, usb....? If something as simple as thunderbird is crashing and windows is corrupting itself, something is utterly fundamentally wrong with the machine.

A bad/unseated sata cable, badly set up bios, no smbus drivers installed, dying harddrive etc. Theres quite a few things which can cause such a problem, most of them usually related to a badly configured computer.

I have an extension cable that allows me to move the monitor and keyboard into other rooms. Forgot what the correct name for the cable is..its a low voltage computer cable

he is claiming it is causing static or something..but I think he is just covering for something wrong in the system. He has a lying problem that I recently discovered.

I had cases where static was crashing a computer sometimes, but what you describe does not match that. Static will not crash specific applications but the whole system.
What you describe sounds to me as if a key component (CPU, RAM, Motherboard) is not ok.
Pretty often an extensive memory test (memtest86+ for example) can show up such problems. Just don't use the extension cord during the test and leave it running for a night or two.

Thanks for the additional info.

He also blamed the graphics card.

I havent noticed anything else acting up on it before it crashes.
