View Full Version : can´t render bigger than 3b avi in Maya 8.5
tomikarjalainen 10-09-2009, 01:01 PM Hi all,
Is there any solution how to render to an animation AVI with Maya 8.5 that is bigger than 3gb? I can see the the file in the explorer when the rendering is done, but can´t view it with:
*windows media player
*vlc player
*quicktime
And can´t import it to:
*premiere
*after effects
Any ideas anyone?

Render a sequence of images (tga) instead of an avi. When the render is done u can import it into any compositing or editing software where the avi can be created.

I see.. is this a common problem for all Maya versions or is this problem only at Maya 8.5?
And if I render this animation inte a sequence of images (tga), what differences are there
between tga and tga-16?

tga-16????
I have no idea. But I have a feeling that u are using "maya software" renderer instead of mental ray...

It's a general practice to never render out an avi straight from any animation program. If something happens during the middle of the render, your whole file is corrupt.

Im sorry..My brain must stopped working when I wrote the tga-16 question *lol* I ment Tiff-16..but forget that one.
I´m involved in a huge fan movie, a combination between Star Wars and Star Trek and I´m involved doing 3d modeling and special effects, so here is my questions(if someone is kind to anser :) )
*what rendering type is best for getting the highest quality? hardware, software or mental ray?
*what image format is the best one to get the highest quality and can keep working with it afterwords in premiere, after effects, Zbrush and so on...
*how many frames do you guys think it is necessery to have to getting a smooth animation? for the moment I´m using 150frames/s.
*is 150dpi in resolution too much?
Thanks again everybody who has got involved in this thread.
I forgot to tell you that I´m using Maya 8.5 x64 -version.

Some very broad questions. Hope to give some helpful answers.

They aren't "rendering types" so much as entirely different renderers. If you're currently using Maya's renderer, then you'll likely need to stick with it to finish your production. Learning mental ray can take months if not years. But mental ray can produce far, far more realistic results and most of the stuff you see from movies is rendered in MR or Pixar's Renderman. I doubt you've seen anything in a movie in the last ten years rendered with Maya's software renderer.
*what image format is the best one to get the highest quality and can keep working with it afterwords in premiere, after effects, Zbrush and so on...
You can use .tif files or .iff files, or if you don't need any alpha or depth channels then .bmp files work okay too. .tif and .iff files have their alpha and other info embedded, so they save a lot of space, as opposed to rendering one .bmp of color and one of the alpha for each frame.
*how many frames do you guys think it is necessery to have to getting a smooth animation? for the moment I´m using 150frames/s.
That is very, very high. Nobody's TV can reproduce that, and YouTube certainly can't even come close, even if the monitor you're viewing the video on DOES go that high, which is rare. Most monitors run at 60Hz, or 60 frames-per-second.
TV formats are 29.97 FPD for NTSC and 25 FPS for PAL. Movies at a theater are generally 59.94 (60i). If you're rendering at 150 FPS, you're wasting 4/5ths of your frame, and thus 4/5ths of your rendering time.
*is 150dpi in resolution too much?
150dpi isn't a screen resolution, that's a print resolution and doesn't tell us how large your images are. DPI is "dots per inch", so without the measurement of how many inches you're rendering at, "150dpi" doesn't mean anything.
You'll want to select a resolution typical of what most of your viewers will be using. Here's a basic list of standard TV resolutions:
SDTV: 480i (NTSC uses an analog system of 486i split into two interlaced fields of 243 lines)
SDTV: 576i (PAL, 720×576 split into two interlaced fields of 288 lines)
EDTV: 480p (720×480 progressive scan)
EDTV: 576p (720×576 progressive scan)
HDTV: 720p (1280×720 progressive scan)
HDTV: 1080i (1920×1080 split into two interlaced fields of 540 lines)
HDTV: 1080p (1920×1080 progressive scan)
YouTube would be 320x240 video size, or 640x480 for "High Quality".
I'd generally say that if you're not viewing it on a huge screen, go with 720p, or 1280x720. That is a decent size and will still be very clean, but again, it really depends on what kind of monitor or TV your viewers will be using as well.

To summary all:
- Best choise to render is: MR or Pixar's Renderman
- .tif files or .iff files works best using alpha and/or depth
- 60 frames per sec is good enough for showing on computer screen / projector
- i can have default settings for dpi wich is 72 and that should be enough
How big must the canvas be before you need to go from 720p to full hd 1920x1080 to keep the best quality? We may be showing this on a canvas like 10x15meters
Does anyone know the differences between .tif , tiff16, iff and tga? Wich of theese is best quality and works best to work afterwords without loosing any quality? I´m just little curious :)
Thanks a lot for all your help this far..you all have been great!
