Lightwave has a special Wrap Deformer called Hardlink, and Im wondering if its possible, and as simple, to do in Maya?

here is an example - ftp://ftp.newtek.com/multimedia/LW8Demos/hardlink002.avi scrub to end to see in action.

2 ooooold tests i did in LW years ago - http://www.3dink.com/newchain8.2.mov and http://www.3dink.com/newchain8.mov basically a simple 20x20 Cloth plane, with one object made of several rings, Hardlinked to follow the Cloth.

notice how the chains transform and rotate but DO NOT crumple like they do with a normal Wrap deformer in Maya....

now, I know that you could do several things such as Rivet or Locators attached to verts and then attach individual rings to them, but with 100,000 rings, etc that could get mad.

would love to know if its possible to easily and quickly do this in Maya?

or how hard it would be for someone to write a Wrap that can handle it?

Cheers!

You could try a closest point hair follicle or other UV constraint for each ring. I don't think Maya has any transform level wrap functionality built-in.
