So i was looking around the softimage site and saw you can save $5,575.00 off XSI if you trade-in your previous software.

How much does XSI cost? It is scary to see that kind of discount. I can only fear how much it regularly costs.

Also how much is upgrading it from update to update?

thanks,

Jason

Keep in mind that the only way you can save $5,575.00, is when you wanne switch from Maya Unlimited !!!!!!!!!!

Certainly NOT when you wanna switch from Truespace :) :)

Where did you get those prices... mine are from about 8 months ago from my local reseller... Interesting that there is such a significant difference... guess I will move to another state before I step up to the commercial version... and yes Advanced has more than just cloth & hair... I was typing as I was walking out the door.

Yeah, I know about the discount-tradein offer, I'm wondering about vmpre's pricing info... I have no doubt that my pricing could be wrong, just wondering where he got his pricing info. It is not listed on SI's site.

Hey JDex

"The SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.3.5 nonlinear 3-D production environment, which supports Windows and Linux operating systems, is currently in beta testing and will be available in June 2003. Suggested retail pricing starts at $6,750 USMSRP. "

Take a look at the Availability and Pricing section here: http://www.softimage.com/home/press/pressreleases/030407_xsi_v35.htm

That $6750 is for the workstation version of XSI Essentials meaning non-floating license. The Enterprise version of XSI Essentials is closer to $7000 and that comes with a floating license.

As far as how I know this, because the company I work for has 11 licenses of XSI and I asked what the reseller quote was. Plus I have seen these numbers before, I seem to recall seeing them online, I just dont remember where.

But trust me those numbers are pretty close.

Well, there it is... guess I should have a talk w/ my local reseller and make sure this is the pricing that they're offering... BTW jmcalpin, on the page vmpre just linked to it says the upgrade from 3.0 to 3.5 is as little as $1495 so the 3.5-4.0 upgrade will likely be in-line with that.

you must be on crack =) Lightwave goes for 1000-1500 and comes with 999 render licenses, cloth, rigid bodies, soft bodies, etc.. etc..

oh and free upgrades and no maintenance. you only pay for full point upgrades and if you buy a copy within a few months of a major upgrade, it's usually included.

i'd love to find out the ratio of Essential/Advanced sales.

with the $5500 discount $7000 is... 1,500. so yeah that's correct.

12000 -5500 is 6500 so yeah it is cheaper than the 7000 essential price tag without a discount.

But at 1,500 an upgrade i'm not sure if any of that matters. If updates come out every 3 years i have no problem but at that price every year or 2 and I'll have to sell my crack pipe.

i doubt that discount applies on the essentials license. it's "up to 5755" isnt it? i'm pretty sure the highest discount would be for trading in a copy of Houdini Master (msrp $17,000) on XSI Advanced. yeah.. that's worth it alright. if anyone can enlighten us on the discounts based on what you trade in and against what version i'd be very grateful.

personally though.. i think if anyone was waiting around for XSI to become more complete.. 4.0 is the answer they've been waiting for. at least i hope so.

if Softimage doesn't lower their prices.. the least they could do is lower maintenance/upgrade costs. come on now.. ;)

mmm crack. =) let me know if you decide to sell that pipe.. i'm still searching for a job and a second hand pipe is all i can afford =) heh.

"it's "up to 5755" isnt it?"

i always miss that part of it. Yeah should of guessed I wouldn't be that lucky....

Does anyone know if softimage comes with Avid DS. We have a DS system at work and my boss insists that it is part of it. I just see an empty folder named softimage in the start menu.

Anyone know?

No... SI does not come with Avid DS afaik.

Lowering the maintenece costs would actually be better than lowering the licensing cost for studios, but it would likely cut down their great support, which would suck.

The recent pattern of upgrades has been about every six months, not every year or two.

yeah too much for me.

Well at some point the price will go down. Economy of scale and all that. As more studios get it the less they will have to sell it for. May be a while before it happens though.

thanks

Think about it this way.

Maintance, this is an educated guess, for Essentials is about $1500 per year.

Wow thats a lot of money...but...with Softimage's recent track record that you pointed out, the end user is getting 2 upgrades per year, plus any patches they release, plus phone support.

Hmm...the MAX upgrade was, what, $795 every 18 months and no phone support.

So for about the same price I can get 2 upgrades a year with XSI (provided they keep up that pace) and phone support verses 2 upgrades of MAX over a 36 month period and no phone support during that 36 months.

For the money I think you may be getting a lot more from Soft.

Of course I could be talking out of my ass. So please feel free to correct me. Thats just what I am seeing from the cheap seats.

George, to answer one your questions, we asked our reseller about trading in a copy of MAX5 for a new license of XSI Essentials. I think we got quoted $3000 for the trade-in. So take 3K off the price of Essentials.

At least I think that was the quote. Dont hold me to that.

DS is a seperate product from XSI and cost way more than it as well. They both share the same interface design so maybe her thought it was a XSI screen.
