Title: Cohen the Barbarian
Name: Eoin Cannon
Country: Australia
Software: 3ds max, Digital Fusion, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

My take on Paul Kidby's interpretation of Terry Pratchett's Discworld character, Cohen the Barbarian. This was done for fun and practice in my spare time and I learnt a lot in the process of creating it.

Amazing! I just finished reading "The Light Fantastic" 2 minutes ago!
The character is great, the lightning just perfect.
I only think he looks very strong here while in the book he made an impression of a man tired with life and funny in appearance, well... he could take care about himself of course :D.

Once again a fantastic work.
5***** from me.

ahahahahah very nice one! i love this character!

Discworld rules! Even the games were some of the most funny games ive played. Thinking about that, that would be a cool theme to make :)!

Ok, back to pic, its been said already, great lighting, modeling and texturing. I think it'd look fuuny to have him in a more weaker pose too.

A+ overall! it reminds my Bond...old Bond (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=132&t=813695) pic too ;)

that's very cool. your character should go fight with madail's character. may the oldest win.

Thanks for the kind comments folks

Pixelatedkiwi - I started modeling a few months ago, then I got really busy at work and couldn't do anything for a month or so, it was little bits here and there for the whole thing. I can only work in what spare time I get after hours unfortunately.

vmarines - I basically started out with a simple basemesh made in MAX and then sculpted and posed in ZBrush. All of the clothes were sculpted to get the basic shapes and then rebuilt in MAX 2010 using graphite tools. Once I had the basic setup I separated out the head to sculpt it at a higher detail. I used displacement maps in MAX on the body to achieve the sculpted details and also some cavity maps to help with creating bump maps

Wow, looks really great ! I would love to see a pose though where he was struggling to carry that huge sword. It looks a bit posed someone so weak carrying a huge sword so easily, as if the sword isn't heavy.

critique: The ear seems to be a little overexposed to the back lighting for the Scater effects

but it is a great pose, did u UV layout after Zbrush once or often times during the process
after going back and forth

I just realized you can see the mesh of the bear in the beard :/ at the tip I mean. Its like a tail or something, might wanna photoshop that out

EoinCannon
10-10-2009, 12:05 AM
Thanks a lot for the comments folks, much appreciated

Framedworld -Yeah it does look like a tail :( 3DS Max hair & fur seems to have a limit on the amount of segments a single hair can have. I wanted proper long beard hairs that would have looked better but because of the segment limit, they looked smooth and really wrong, so I had to grow it like a tail. I'm kind of out of time to work on this character but for my portfolio I might quickly try to photoshop it out.

VMarines - Yeah I think I got carried away with wanting to show SSS :)
I did the UVs after the sculpt in ZBrush. I expoted at the lowest subdivision level, did the UVs in MAX and the imported back into ZBrush. I was kind of stupid and did them after it was posed so I couldn't make it symmetrical, ended up with messy UVs.

Very VERY cool. However, before sending to Terry or Paul Kidby, better make sure you've got his name right...

Josh was the first name of the original book cover illustrator, Josh Kirby. It's easy enough to get confused.

I'm a huge Pratchett fan. Excellent model.

Great job. Which is heaviest, the man or the sword? He's a little guy but still a bt intimidating!

Bao2
10-12-2009, 01:33 PM
LOL LOL LOL
I only miss the beautiful girls at his legs. LOL

The beard is not right in my opinion, it seems like a tail of some animal instead a beard, it would be better with much less hairs and changing the shape because it "starts the tail of the animal" just in his face because the width changes abruptly.

Incredible and very very funny job.

It would be great if he was holding that huuuuge sword with difficulty instead of holding it with such easiness.

The hands are not good, too much thick the fingers are, and too bigs.

you make hair and fur by Vray ? i like it ....!!! congratulation

SO coll

but VR?Mental ray?

EoinCannon
10-25-2009, 10:56 AM
I'm glad you like it

the hair was rendered in Mental Ray using the technique from Master Zap's blog found here
http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2007/10/hot-fuzz-hair-revisited.html

That method does not work very well with the matte/shadow material though so I had to also render the hair self illuminated to create an alpha to composite the hair on top.

NIce job
the character has a lot of personality
I really enjoy how he is extremely pale. The skin shader was well done.
The only thing that stands out a lot to me is his beard. It comes off as a long tail, as in it looks too much like fur rather than long beard hair.
Hopefully these references can be of use

Beard reference 1 (http://www.rockhospital.com/wp-content/uploads/257611flnk_w.jpg)

Beard reference 2 (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/jackpassionbyfrederic.jpg)
perhaps maybe adding some more scraggle or curl along with some gaps between some of the hairs will help out.
I like the heroic lighting

I used displacement maps in MAX on the body to achieve the sculpted details and also some cavity maps to help with creating bump maps

Stunning work! Congratulations!

I have got a question: you mentioned the displacement maps. What SubD-Level from ZBrush did you use in max to render the image. Did you use a low (or even the lowest) level of the mesh? Could you, please, post your render settings for the displacement part? I always got some problems with that.

Thanks for sharing!

vicmarines

Hi TonyClifton

I just see ur question and maybe this will help u:

depend on the goal of the work if it is for a still or for an animation....

if i dont care animation, if i justwant a still i can send a heavy object to MAYA or 3dsmax from zbrush
not more that 500,000 polys for maya for performance each object

so let say in this case from zbrush let say for a 7 subDivitions object
once i have eveything sculpted select the subD that have 500,000 polys and delete lower subd
export that level to MAYA or 3dsmax and from that subd to the higher make a normal map
for the high detail

in the next case i do care to send low poly to MAYA or 3dsmax because is for an animation sequence, i can do let say for a 7 subDivitions
select the 1st subd then make a displacement to have the details up to the level 4 subd and do a normal map from subd 4 to subd 7 to have the high freq details

working with displacement in MAYA u can use mentalray displacement aproximation for very nice result instead of maya dispalcement

But I really curious, If I modeling my character in Zbrush. How can I paint my characters body and after everything, If I connected zbrush to 3d max like .obj My body paint will be disappear in 3d max when I rendered.
Can you explain How can I take a render with my characters bodypaint in 3dmax
