View Full Version : rendering a z channel?
Shootr 08-12-2003, 04:17 PM Similar question to the other post, but I just want to know how to render a normal z channel for a single still image.
I found nothing in the max help, but maybe I was looking under the wrong thing.
somebody just tell me where to find it please.

Try rendering out as an .RPF file with a z-channel enabled in exports. Then after rendering is done, select the channel from the channels list in the render window and save it to whatever you want.

Render: Render Elements: "add": Zdepth
Hit render.
There you go. It will pop up another window after the render is done with just the Z-depth.

thanks for you help guys.
Khadiyev,
I tried your method, and it comes out great!
But, whenever I try to save it from the render viewport, it saves the original image with RGB and all the normal stuff.
How do I get just the Z chanel to save and view properly.
Am I suppose to access the RPF file with something?
thanks

Unless I'm a total moron and did'nt understand your question, why not try my method?

yeah, sorry
your method worked quite well too,
However, when I tried it on a larger scene, the z depth only went for a short distnce before falling off into total black.
If there's a way of extending that please let me know. Because your way technically worked a lot easier.

I'm stupid.
as soon as I posted that I went back and found the z parameters.
yeah, that seemed to do the trick.
it looks great.
thanks.
