hello. i couldnt find any thread with a similar problem. i bet it is really trivial but i am a beginner. so if this thread doesnt belong here or wathever fell free to do with it whatever you want. hope i get some answers.

so my question is: is it normal for maya to freeze my whole system by just using painteffect tools? i have a quad core macpro with 8 gb of ram. im not really a computer whiz but i thought that should be enough for maya to run without problems? what can i do. please help. thank you in advance.

What Maya Version do you use?
What Painteffect Tools do you use when it beginn to freeze, does it appear in 2D or 3D mode, or even both?
Which graphics card is build-in?
Did you uprade the RAM?

Generally speaking the system should be able to handle that. What video card are you using? Some features in Maya will be funky or totally broken if used on a system with a gaming card and Paint Effects is one of those picky features. It could also just be a bug in the software. Cheers!

thank you guys.
ok i made a mistake there are two dual core processors not a quad
i used grass and trees brushes in maya 2009
the graphics card is NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500
i dont know if the ram was upgraded, since i didnt purchase the computer.
i sort of have it on loan :D
so any ideas how to improve the preformance?

What about driver update for you graphics card, are they up to date?
If not, download the latest driver for your graphics adapter. It might help out.
I think Autodesk has some updates available for Maya 2009. Look @ autodesk website under support and download the last updates.

When you use those brushes and Maya freezes your system, does it appear in 2D or 3D mode?

3D. i tried not to display mesh. works a little better, it froze a bit later :D thank you so much for all the help. i will try these things you suggested. if not i can live without the grass brushes.

If it doesn´t solve the problem, check your memory for errors.
What about all other brushes, do those operate well, or is it just the grass and tree brushes?

hey guys. my problems are still going on. just wanted to thank you again and let you know that it is almost certainly a graphic card issue. since my post i have had a single graphic failure, the computer froze once during web surfing and multiple times during very basic work on maya. i couldnt find any driver updates as mac drivers are supposed to come with the os updates. i did some hardware tests and they say everything is fine. i hope i wont have to change the graphics card as it is not the cheapest one. it kinda looks that way though.

i dont know if we're having the same problem, but my im using mbp ATI 1600XT and sometimes it 'freezes' too, not totally since i can move the cursor, but no one responding to my click so i have to restart my os. i think its maya-osx problem theres a guy also having the same problem at maya thread.

yeah, exactly the same problem. so you are saying its a mac-maya problem? i read on some of the mac forums that people had the same problem but they werent using maya. and also some said that they changed the graphics card and everything was ok.

i am wondering if an older version lets say maya 8 would have the same problems?
