Her secret place to meditate on her troubled feelings and growing anger.
PS 6.
NB: to those who are wondering, the slight breeze is facing the viewer, hence the conflicting movement of her hair and veil :p

Thanks for viewing.

Edit : I've updated the image : added the pale coloured strokes in the distant background to warm it up and break its uniformity;
thanx for the helpful crits :)

Thanx :)

it is all done in photoshop 6 with brush and mostly airbrush, no customized brushes were used.

This is beautiful. No crits from me. I'm mostly pleased with the mood of this peice. She looks so tranquil. Kinda eary, but still it's very, very good.

My hat's off to you. Well done. :D

really good work,

only thing i would do is add a little more contrast (mainly the face)
but yeah really nice detail:thumbsup:

Thanks all! :)

I agree on the lack of contrast not only on the face but in the whole picture; actually, i lessen it to try to convey some sort of "northern" feel to the scenery (not sure my english makes sense :hmm: )

Looks great, only thing is the face dosn't face much detail like on the left side of the cheek,

it seems all washed out, and you can;t see that it is skin, maybe add some faint lines for skin texture, or some blemishes or something.

and here neck looks flat, i think ot could use some more shawdow on the bottom right side to bring the neck back in to the picture abit

Where did you get the idea she was smoking? Roger Nguyen said that that cloud of wispy stuff is fabric, not smoke.

Very nice work indeed, her hands are laid out poorly though, it is not obvious how her hands are situated, outstanding picture though...

yeah, as Jaun said, the hand pose is not so clear for understanding.
and I've got an idea that one of the shoes could be made as it would be nealy falling down. haha!

Great painting, my only crit would be that the effort and quality you put on the main character should also be seen on the rock's carved faces, they look poorly detailed and lack perspective, maybe the trees could use some tweaking also.

Great work, I love it.

My only comment is (maybe someone already said it. I didn't read through every reply) if you have to explain in text what is happening with the hair and veil, then maybe that was not the best execution of it.

But beyond that, again great work!

Wow! Impressive!

How do you manage to use the smudge tool in Photoshop on a large image.
Im doind a poster thats 32 MB and any smudges I do are updated 5 seconds later!
I got an Athlon 1.4 750MB Ram and Quadro 750. Is there something Im missing here.

Just thought Illd ask but cool pic!

Splendid job!
Very insightful and yet mysterious. "Is she some kind of vampress in disguise?" or something like that... We don't know what's going on in her head... and that makes it an interesting piece!
Very well done! Great technique!

I love the look of this work. For once, my only crit/question isn't technical, but purely artistic: Why are those faces in the rock? They seem almost like a part of an entirely different work inserted into this one.

The only idea I have about that, is that they might symbolize whatever demons it is she's sorting out, but then were it me I'd have made them very subtle, so you don't notice them until you've already "gotten into" the image.

My $.02

Wow, nice work! I like the choice of colors. Very individualistic. The face is amazing but I think it might be slightly out of proportion. Is that her right ear or is it a flower? Her fingers seems out of proportion as well. I like how the face covey a troublesome message.

Two thumbs up!
cheers:beer:

I like those evil faces under the rock too.

Thanks everyone for your replies, they are greatly appreciated :)

I agree with most of the crits, especially about the hands and the rock faces, they obviously need some more work. however, mixing up her veil with some cigarette smoke is a bit puzzling..

fnselmi : I don't use the smudge tool, as you said it's too eager for RAM. I use the blur filter on selected area and soften it with the airbrush tool.

great composition and colors, but I would like to see more detail, or perhaps less uniform strokes to add some interesting points to it. Also more contrast would be good for me :)
Keep the good work ;)

Beautiful work, but I agree with CourtJester; the faces seem to be fighting for our attention within the composition, rather than being something we can wander to later on, part of observing the environment. Also, the middle-third of the distant background looks little bit clone-stamped if you know what I mean. :) The patterning looks a bit too uniform. I would suggest messing it up a touch. Other than that, gorgeous work. Wonderful lighting and sense of place, and the detailing in her dress, hair, veil, etc.. is really beautiful. Nice work!

turtle-rn
08-15-2003, 03:09 AM
danimat0r : I see what you mean about the clone-stamped background and can't agree more. Actually, i was surprised no one has mentionned it before; it's certainly the most unfinished part of that piece and i will probably re-work on it some day.. when i'll find what would fit best in there to avoid the picture looking too "crowded"

thanx all for commenting. :)

Sorry for those who can't see the picture.
you can try there :

but since over there the picture is also linked from the same web host, the problem might occur again. Infortunately, i have no other web host

It's a great painting, and I was just about to enter it into the gallery but something caught my eye the second I looked at it again, I missed it the first time when I plugged, but the anatomy is apparently shot, especially in the upper arm region, looking at her bicep, they're very long in comparison to her forearm, and looking even closer, her elbow seems rather round, which makes her bicep appear to "cave-in" if you know what I mean. Also judging by where her hips are in the dress there, she would also have very long thighs for the knees to comfortable fit over the edge as you're implying. Aside from that you did everything right imo, but this is what raised the red flag for the submission. Care to elaborate?

lildragon : I didn't quite grasp all you said but there's no doubt this piece is fullfilled with anatomy flaws. Actually, i must admit i did not pay much attention to the accuracy of the anatomy while painting it and even if i did, not sure the end result would have been much better. (should definitely use references!!).
At this point, re-working on her anatomy might be rather hazardous :hmm: . I'll try my chance on the next pieces!

Thanks for commenting. :)
