View Full Version : New Rigging Tutorial
digitalberet 05-16-2002, 05:40 AM Hey Everyone,
Just thought that I would let you know that I have a brand new video tutorial featured on my website. It is on alternative arm setups using Lightwave 7.5. The tutorial will show you how to rig an arm that can be animated with one null using forward kinematics. By using FK instead of IK, you can get more control over the arm, for extreme poses. There is also a part in the tutorial about Lightwave 7.5's new Simple Orient Affectors motion modifier. The tutorial is 9 minutes long, and is in DivX format. Do not worry, the file is only 5 mbs. I love DivX! Anyway, the tutorial can be found in the Special Feature section of the site. Hope you enjoy it. Have a great day!

Joel D.

Nice job Joel, I learned a lot in 9 minutes! As someone who uses Animation Master and is just starting to learn Lightwave I really look forward to your "Smartskin" tutorial.

Man!
There has been such an overwhelming response to the tutorial that my web server is exceeding its 15 GB tranfer rate! This means if you try to download the tutorial and you get a "Page Unavailable Server Busy" message, there are no empty spaces for downloading. The site is not down, however. All you have to do is check back and hopefully you can get in on the downloading action. Anyway, thanks so much for the positive response! I will try to get the next tutorial up in a few weeks, if my schedule allows it. In reply to a tutorial on animating, I might have one in the future, but until then I highly recommend the Animtor's Survial Kit. It is a great learning resource for both 2D and 3D animators. Chock full of animating principles. Hope you all have a great day!

Hey everyone,
I thought it might be easier to download the file if you try
downloading straight from the link. All you have to do is Right_click and click Save Target As.... on this link:
http://www.digitalberet.com/feature_pics/arm_tut.avi
If you do this you might have a better chance of getting the file.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Joel D.
P.S. Just a reminder, the file is in DivX format.

Joel,
Thanks for the great tutorial, I learned a lot from it! I'm trying to combine your setup with the use of sliders, but somehow it doesn't work as I expected. I added a slider to control the first bones of the hand. The other bones have the simpleorienteffectors applied to them. But when I drag the sliders, the rotation of the bones become a mess! Anyone have any idea if it is possible to use sliders in conjunction with simpleorienteffectors?

Hey Guys,
Whoever wants to give a shot at mirroring the file on their site, by all means, the more the merrier! If you could just give me the exact URL of the tutorial, I will update my download page to include the other mirrors. (For example, the file on my server is at http://www.digitalberet.com/feature_pics/arm_tut.avi ) If you have a killer web server which can handle lots of bandwidth, and you do not have the file, I will be glad to personally e-mail the tutorial to you. I will not be able to e-mail the file to more than one or two people though. Thank you so much for all your help. Have a great day!
Regards,
Joel

Hmmmm,
That is strange. I setup my character hands with sliders and it seemed to work fine with the Orient Affectors. I also , added a master channel so I could attach the other fingers to a single slider via expression. If I have time I might upload a file with the sliders applied to the bones in the hand. Until then you might want to take a look at Blackbourn's tutorials on Sliders, if you want. Hope this helps, have a great day!

No problem, there must be numerous people trying to get this 5mb file if it totally consumed a 15gb limit in a couple days!

Great stuff, I'm also a previous Animation Master user and can't wait for your next tutorial. Thanks!
Hey joel, thank you! this is a good tutorial that is being very valuable for many of us. I Always thought that lightwave was limited in animation because all the cg riggins i have done till now were bad and worse for animation. With your tutorial i have changed of seeming, now i think that lightwave is powerful in this point. I will wait for more tutorials. Very very good work Joel :)

Simple, clear yet explaining relatively advanced concepts.
As a video you can hear and follow the ideas. really the best way to create a tut is a video at a normal 'human' pace with explanations.
text based tutorials have their place. but people learn best by seeing, hear and doing. just like you've done.
thanks.

Great tutorial!!
I just wounder if it`s posible to use pitch limits with FK, like you can do with IK?
Thanks for the tutorial!!!
Is there any more coming up?

Sure thing,
I did not have time to cover it in my tutorial, but I had some limits applied to the arm of my model. Just check the Limits check boxes and enter your values. Have a good one!
