Hey all. I am already planning on doing Jeremy Birn's lighting masterclass on here when its run again. I am just looking into what other lighting focused on-line courses I can take.

So far I have found these
http://www.gnomonschool.com/courses/ol_lighting-rendering-01.php
http://www.gnomonschool.com/courses/ol_lighting-rendering-02.php

Has anyone on here done these and can recommend them?

BTW My background is an artist working in Archi Viz using V-Ray wanted to learn techniques more geared towards the film industry.

If it's film you're after I'd advise leaning more towards this sort of thing:

Added that to my list :)

Why in particlar would that be better? Cant seem to find a general price for it and it says Take RenderMan Fundamentals (http://www.escapestudios.com/en_GB/online-learning/courses/renderman-courseware/renderman-courseware-productinfo.html) and get RenderMan Courseware free but clicking it links back to the same page.

Details of the classroom based fundamentals course can be found here:-

If you would like anymore details about this or any other training we provide please email us at training [at] escapestudios.com

All the best

It would be better because film lighting is a whole different ballgame. You can't just place a few area lights, turn on gi and let the renderer do the rest for you :) Film rendering is still renderman-based by and large.

Thanks playmesumch00ns, thats pretty much what I am after. Placing a few area lights and turn on GI is a common practice when I work hehe. Never going to be a pixar lighting TD with that methodology.

Still dont get the price of the Escape Studios one, will contact them.

Thought I should clarfy by saying mainly Animation Feature Film rather than just film VFX :)

I have also found stuff on TD College for teaching renderman. Its crazy how little there is out there compared to Mental Ray. Has anyone taken the TD College course and can recomend it?

ILM, MPC, Framestore, Double Negative, Cinesite, all use renderman... and i could go on :)

For animation it's a bit more mixed I guess, Animal Logic use PRMan I think. Dreamworks have their own renderer but as I understand it's similar to PRMan. Sony are obviously using Arnold for everything now. I don't think I need to spell out what Pixar uses :)

We've had cause to use mental ray occasionally too in the past but we're finally purging it from our pipeline. Thank god.

Wonder how this discussion started. If I indicated anywhere that I didnt think renderman was king in the industry then I honastly didnt mean to as of course it is :P

So I am trying to find a course on it. I am not sure about the escape course simply because its only a week long. The only other thing I found was the TD Colege course but I dont know anything about it and could do with some review.. I am dead set on learning it but would much rather have some guided training somehow. The binary divinity one looked so good :(
