View Full Version : tools for the poor artist :)
bobtronic 08-12-2003, 02:19 PM Hi folks,
As I have a computer, internet access and such things
I wouldn't call me poor but I don't have the money for
Photoshop and Co. So I like to know what free- and
shareware treasures you use besides C4D.
Here are my favourites:
Wings3D (great modeling app)
http://www.wings3d.com/
Ultimate Unwrap 3D (unwrapper and UV editor)
http://www.unwrap3d.com/
Terragen (landscape generator and renderer)
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/
TMPG Encoder (nice MPEG encoder)
http://www.tmpgenc.net/
Virtual Dub (video processing utility)

happy rendering, Bob

Great links! I've used Virtual Dub for video capture and had a lot of luck with it. Highly recommended, esp. for freeware.

It's not photoshop, but you can still do a lot with it...

PAP (Plastic Animation Paper)
http://plasticanimationpaper.dk/
Alias Sketchbook (not really shareware, as after 14 day trial the resolutino is limited to 1024x768, and you can not make customized tools or pallettes anymore but still a nice simple sketch application)

Thanks for the links
This PAP looks very promising - I will check it out.
Alias sketchbook is very nice. I have the lite version
wich is really cut down but though I very like the
feeling and the look of the tools - especially the pencil.

Aqsis - Free Reyes Renderman renderer. Does GI, fast motion blur, true sub-pixel displacement, soft shadows, and much more. Equally as good as PRMan.

I would have to suggest Blender. I've used it for ages before ending up in the Cinema arena.
It is quirky, but simply the best FREE 3D suite around. You will not find an equivalent amount of functionality without having to shell out a couple of hundred bucks. As simple as that.

Hi James,
Yep, Blender is cool. I have simply forgotten that.
I am in deep love with this program. There are some
things in it you can't do with Cinema.

(painterly stuff for pc's)

it's worth doing a search on www.versiontracker.com or www.downloads.com (version tracker has more reviews by mac users, and downloads is good for pc users to find out about what they're about to download) as you'll find an absolute ton of stuff (too much to post here), there's also some really cool compression programs out there as freeware or shareware.
Cinepaint link is actually http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/.
This thread is so cool! I had no idea there was so much out there...

a pencil and paper - still one of the cheapest, and best tools you'll ever need as an artist! ;)
