maya can export to obj, max has 2 plugins written for it obj import and obj export which makes your poly models travel both ways...which is nice you can find them here

Obviously it needs to be answered again, so here's my 2 cents.
Kaydara's FBX interchange format is free and converts geo, UV's and even some animation and texture info back and forth. PolyTrans is the more expensive stuff but does a good job. Both works on a whole bunch of platforms
