Still need to tweak textures, add normal and specular, add vines to the pillars, add damage pass and extra details into the mesh. Any thoughts?

hey
ancient pillars where build with different pieces like here (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/33/Korinthische_S%C3%A4ulenordnung_Entasis2.png.png) and here (http://www.meine-urlaubsbilder.de/media/520/ruine07081011093f34.jpg). there is a massive base on the ground, the pillar with the vines and "crown"-piece at the top.

Thanks, not quite sure what you're trying to say though? That pillars always need to have a solid floor base?

Yeah, that's how I understand it. They wouldn't be placed on te ground but on a stone foundation...?

Btw, Adam, I've updated the metal surface text. Might want to update your post :)

blog updated,

as for the pillar situation. Surely only huge buildings would need it? This is just 4 pillars and a roof piece. I'm sure I've seen pillars planted into the ground before.

what i am trying to discribe is this part http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4645/pillarbase.jpg. these round elements are typical for greek pillars.

A solid start, though it looks like something's missing. I'd think about what used to happen in this garden - was there a sculpture centerpiece? Maybe a water fountain? Was it part of a larger building / structure, or isolated as a place to reflect?

Lots of potential to be a really great piece. Your texturing work is really good, so I'd focus on adding some more depth to the scene and going for a really atmospheric piece, maybe a lonely sunset lighting setup - really capture the memories of times past.

I can think of some things I may or may not do to the piece, but the number one question on my mind is what is the destination of the piece? Right now it looks like a prop piece for a handheld console game which explains why the pillars have minimal detailing rather than complicated crowns and bases.

Or perhaps part of a 3d isometric game where you'll never zoom in close enough to see that such detail is absent.

I like the texturing, it's very clean and easy to read. I'm jealous of people who manage to produce such crisp, clean textures at any resolution.
