View Full Version : Particle SW rendering bad with motion blur

I have a stream of particles(Cloud) that uses a ramp for color and a ramp for transparency to fade it out which basically renders fine. However, if I turn on 2D or 3D Motion Blur, there ends up being a blob rendered right after where the particles have faded out. I even tried creating a cache of particles on my hard drive since I found that the manual mentioned this would sometimes have to be done. It didn't help. I used motion blur a lot in LW with particles and I really need to find a way around this if possible. In this case, it's just the exhaust of a spaceship I'm experimenting with. Thanks.

more time now..

there are some quite ugly ways around that..

1) get something like realsmart motionblur and do the blur in the post

2) use your particles to create a particle instancer with spheres.
render the spheres with motion blur (2d) and with the checkbox "keep motion vectors"
after that use the maya command line tool "blur2d.exe".
in there you can use your real particle rendering as the color info (-c) and the spheres render as the motion vector info (-v)

those two switches are not in the help of "blur2d.exe"!! but they work

and tell alias to finally make particle blur possible because the lack of it sucks!

Thanks for the replies guys. You're right Alexx, it does suck.:thumbsdow I wouldn't even mind as much if they just didn't blur but they add a fully opaque blob at the end after the main stream has faded out so that 2D and 3D Blur can't be used at all in the scene without using compositing. I'll take a look at your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks.

I got an answer from someone on the Alias site and it appears this is a bug but easily worked around. A small area of Transparency needs to be added at the BEGINNING of the Transparency Ramp and then the fade from opaque to transparent can begin.
