From the iray FAQ:

Are iray and mental ray two different products?
No. iray is a GPU accelerated photorealistic rendering technology offered as a rendering mode of mental ray 3.8 and RealityServer 2.4.

I'm sure Max will get it first in 2011...but the way I read the site, iray is a hardware accelerated pathway for mental ray. Do we need to start planning on adding nvdia GPUs to our render servers to get the full effect? Or am I too optimistic here and it's just another niche product that won't help us vfx/animators.

iray is what you feel after smoking weed

either that or it's Apple's top secret laser gun

My magic ball is telling me that unfortunately Autodesk wont have the budget to integrate it in Maya 2011, but they will manage to spare some money to integrate it to Max 2011.

Isn't that a given? 64-bit version in 2021

Yeah, Maya 2011 sounds like the earliest it could be integrated. There's a thread about iray in CG News:

Almost hard to believe they bowed down to the almighty vowel when naming their silliness. Apple practically owns that vowel; I wonder if they'll have a fit about it. And how come nobody uses the "o" or the "a" anymore? What's wrong with "oray"? I guess, when said aloud, it sounds pretty stupid though...

So from what I've read, iray accelerates most MR functions? I wonder how it stacks up to OptiX, and if Nvidia is back to their ridiculous scheme of competing with themselves again?

OptiX realtime raytracer (http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1249366628071.html)

Seems to me they should just merge OptiX with mental ray and call it "done". Spreading all their R&D thin doesn't seem wise, from an outsider's perspective. We'll need Geforces, Quadros, and Teslas to make all their various software work well, and I don't think you can cram all three into one workstation very effectively.

you missed the point optiX and iray have completly different fields
iray is a GI renderer (path tracer if you prefer), is not a realtime raytracer
it will be integrated in sceniX (NVSG), so you'll see it in ADSK showcase and all of the softwares based on NVSG (IMHO)

That certainly conforms to known reality; often happens.

I hear you there. Makes sense, I guess I was just pointing out similarities and speculating that maybe Nvidia should or will merge such technologies at some point, especially since many tasks are tending to move towards GPU-based rendering. AMD has "Fusion" coming along, which may or may not change a damn thing in this ridiculous world we live in, and perhaps Nvidia owning mental ray will somehow benefit such technologies in the long run.

A GPU-only version of mental ray wouldn't be terribly helpful at this point, but any acceleration is better than none, and since I'm one of those nerdy Nvidia loyalists I'm looking forward to the tech. But leveraging the GPU for other things like dynamics would be very helpful, with nParticles still being single-threaded and all... Granted, that's not Nvidia's job to implement since it's a Maya-only function, but it sure would be nice.

Still, if iray is Nvidia-only, it seems likely we'll see AMD do something similar. Those two companies (ATI and Nvidia) seem to play ping-pong with technology as much as possible, and I think such competition benefits all.

But come on, mental images... "iray"? Horrible nomenclature. I'm about to email those guys their backup imaginations or something. If it's a joke, much like mine it's not terribly funny.

it's surely part of a project that it's just in its early days
we'll see probably many new things in this fields in the near feature, there will be a lot of competition from other sw developers (chaos, cebas, etc), and from other hw developers too, intel larrabee it's probably something that can change radically this market, much more then the AMD approach (IMHO)

and for the name, i don't dislike it :p anyways, we will use it as a mental ray module, so, who cares ;) eheh

With each purchase of Maya 2011, you'll get 5 licenses of their iRay app for the iPhone so you can batch render on the go.

that would be sad considering the iphone isn't that powerful.

Usually writing a post that seems take the joke seriously suggests that you did not actually get the joke.

you know this how? Since you insist on killing this thread...

There's another thread about this on the cgtalk Forum:

There's also a nice thread on Nvidia's PhysX demo at GDC.

GPUs are finally getting there.

I read sarcasm in the comment when I first read it...

I apologize for being starting the derailment of this thread.

On a more serious note, I'm actually looking forward to iray. Getting the bean counters to understand why they should pay for additional renderers is very very tough, so any additional rendering options are always a plus in my book.
