i modeled a couple characters for an animation and i modeled the clothes and shoes to fit over the entire body of the characters geometry

i rigged the characters and painted the weights for the chrarcters geometry and also painted the weights for their clothes assets as well

now im starting to animate and depending on the action the clothes is intersecting with the skin of the character and im having to go in adjust the weights on each frame to fix this

what are some tips to make my life easier?

should i just delete the characters geometry that wont show up under neath the clothes?

im not sure what the "industry" workflow tactics are in this regard.

any input is welcomed

btw im using maya 2009

Have you tried using nCloth? Make the clothing nCloth and make the body of the character a passive object (the nCloth being the active object). Adjust the attributes of the nCloth nucleus in the attribute editor.

I hope this helped. Maybe there is an easier way?

Other than fine tuning your weights, try using nCloth if you need the clothes to be loose on the body, if you have modelled tight-fitting clothes, try deleting the geometry that you don't see underneath the clothes. This will enable you to have a lighter character to animate with and you have no chance of interecting geometry. Hope this helps!

i found the setup machine plug-in for rigging the body and clothes together and its working out fairly well

especially like the option to animate the proxy in place of the characters complex geometry

im still testing out the rigg and im not sure if im gonna abandon my old rig just yet but so far the results have been very appealing

Even in feature film, clothes are not intersection-proof, even if they are simulated. Often there is a post-process to clean up intersections whether in compositing or manually sculpting fixes on finished animation.
