every time i try to load this shelf i get
The shelf AnimationFriendlyRigging” has items that cannot be read. The shelf will only display the items before the first unreadable item it finds. If you start Maya and save this shelf then you will lose the unreadable items. This will happen automatically if you have your preferences set to save the shelves on exit. ( Continue ) ( Quit Maya )

I removed my old pref and tried again with no luck, my co-worker loaded it fine on his machine
we both use maya 2008 on win
anyideas
thanks

Check the space on the drive where your user folder is located. The usual culprit is that you've ran out of space and when you last closed your maya session, it tried to save your prefs and ended up corrupting the shelf as there was no space to write too.

Also, check to see if you can create a folder in your user prefs directory. Permission issues could also be a problem.

OR, but this isn't your problem as you use 2008.

If you are using Maya 7.0 or lower, there is a new flag in the shelfButton flag that exists in higher versions but will cause lower versions not to be able to read shelf mel scipts. The flag is:
-sourceType

Its used to indicate whether the shelf item is in Pyton or Mel sytax. Python only became available for Maya either in version 8.5 or 2008 (I forget). If you're using 7.01 or lower, just take out that flag and arguments with it in a text editor, resave, and everything will be fine.

If all else fails, to further diagnose the problem, back up your shelf for a moment. Now, load a copy of the shelf and just say yes to the error prompt, save maya and quit. See up to which items are listed in the shelf upone reopen, this will help determine wether a syntax error is the problem, and which particular item has the syntax error.
