Hi im making an environment and am trying to add simple planes with trees which are .tiff with alpha. The problem is when I render the scene the alphas seem to be doing there job but they are not completely removing the parts of the texture that they should! I have got the textures applied to a surface shader which is mapped to Out colour and out transparency. Im also using mr sun and sky withoug FG for now. Any ideas why this is happening?

use a mia_material_x, set the difuse color to black, map the alpha to the cutoutopacity slot and the color to the aditional color slot.

Could you upload a Picture of it?
Is Specular turned of or masked as well?

If you are using transparent maya shaders in MentalRay itīs also importand to turn on "Export with Shading Engine" in the shadingEngine of the Shader, otherwise you might get a lot of problems with all those objects behind.

Sully: I think the easiest solution is to use maya's layeredShader, instead of the surface shader. Set the layeredShader "compositing flag" to "layer texture". Then drag and drop your fileTexture on both "color" and "transparency".
