View Full Version : Compositor speeds?
DigitalArtist 08-11-2003, 04:01 PM I would like to know what is the best desktop compositor for speed and work flow? I liked Shake over Fusion due to it's friendly GUI and help files but since it's moved to Mac/Linux I don't know if it's worth the cost of upgrading. Is their another compositor that offers the features of Shake on PC? Is their any way to make Fusion look less intimidating? At present it's GUI makes me feel like someone just sat me in front of Inferno with out knowing what to do. Not saying compositing is an easy task but trying to remember what the short form lettering on task buttons are can be really anoying. Suggestions for compositors must work with Maya files.

How about Nuke?

I was really considering Shake too but after Apple discontinued it on Windows platform I had looked for other alternatives. The best one right now for resonable price (half of what Shake is on Linux platform) is Digital Domain's Nuke. The interface is mabe not as frendly as on Shake but it got true 3D space for compositing, great keyers (Ultimatte and the Primatte is being added). Some people are complaining about its tracking capability, cannot say much about it. Also they are adding a lot of new features into it. Latest is the addition of FrameCycler.

There is not enough support for Nuke yet...
Digital Fusion is a great option between Combustion (Linear) and Shake (total non-linear), you get the best of both world with DigitalFusion. The only real problem with Combustion and DigitalFusion is the Buffer render...it takes alot of ram and time to render pretty simple composites. Shake is Scanlined, so it renders so much faster, even with 2K slates on a Desktop comp.
Try Nuke, but its really not as friendly as DigitalFusion compared to Shake.
My humble 2 cents.

If you allready have Shake why not just go with linux?. Shake runs even faster in it than it does in windows. The cost is minimal(just yearly support since you allready have it). Red hat is easy as pie to install with any modern hardware that has linux drivers. Apple is required to continue to develop and support the software for another year and a half so we will get atleast a 3.2 or 3.5 out of them with some more Rayz/Chalice features. I donno, I just think if the tool allready suits your needs, then why not continue to use it if the costs are minimal(which they are). If and when the linux version gets canned, then start worrying about it. Right now its a good tool and still kicks everything's ass.
I would say that DF is the best option, Nuke is cool but I don't know, Chalice and RayZ was cool, and just like Shake Apple has kill them. Another great app for pcs was the dead 5D Cyborg, murdered by discreet :)
Well, DF....DF is cool and hes render times can't be compared with combustion ones, he is much faster then C2, from the viewport updates when tweking paramenters trough final output, he has frame buffer with supported boards, and he works with clustering wich is awesome, another cool thing about him is his background render, every time DF detects that your computer is idle he starts cashing your flow for real time preview, you have to enable this option in the file menu, it's great. One way to get used with all those BG, FN, Mrg, Fog, Dfo, Fltr is to open the bin window and right click in some empty or some empty tab and select "Create Bin" > "Standart Tools" this will put thumnails of each tool in the bin for you. You can enable preview on nodes and many other things, cool ones! I think it's worth I try.
Cheers!

I use NUKE on a daily basis...and ill say this much...as long as your not looking for a polished interface....its the fastest compositor out there and had true 3d space....so you can do all pan and tiles or whatever card tricks you like...and.....its all floating point and you can use HDRI images in it....

Hey, what about Houdini Halo?
Can you actually get it as a standalone, or do you have to buy the Master package?

3k?? I might as well get Apple Shake for abit more money.....
I should have got a copy of commotion 3 when I had the chance! The shadow plugin was amazing (not just any crap drop shadow but real controlable shadow!), the auto colour matching is superb as well!
