I have been trying unsuccessfully to rig my character over the last week. The problem I have is that I don’t like rigging – but it’s a necessary evil!

I am not sure which is the best method for skinning my character – in this case a strange monkey-bear hybrid. (This wasn’t intentional but it just came out this way!)

I have tried rigid bind, but find deformation problems around his stomach. I can’t just deselect them from the set because he has a shirt which hangs down by his thighs. Smooth skinning gives me more problems – thighs and arms become too thin ect..

I am not the best Rigger around – so can anyone suggest a straightforward approach to rigging characters or point me to a web-site which has a detailed tutorial?

Hey,

To be quite honest, there is no easy approach to rigging and getting good deformation. It's just like anything, otherwise we would all be clicking one button to build Gollum. Unfortunately there are no shortcuts.

If you go with Rigid Bind, you are going to need to use Lattices and clusters to get decent deformation. If you go the smooth bind root, I'd suggest you use influences and blendshapes to get proper deformation.

I'd honestly recommend you go here: Maya Tutorials (http://www.boris3d.de)

Check out the rigging section and try and learn as much as you can. Otherwise, just get somebody else to rig it for you!!

Cheers for the advice, the web-site you suggested was spot on.
