Hello, how do I get stary light shafts coming out of a can when the lid cracks open?

I'm using Maya 2009 basic no plugins.

The scene is dark. Then the lid of a can opens up. Light shafts stream out as the lid opens.

if you use a spotlight, there are options there for generating volumetric light (light fog).

You can also do this in post very very easily with pretty much any compositing package. They've all got volumetric rays plug-ins of some sort. All you'd need is a matte of the opening in your can.

Personally, I'd probably do some mix of volumetric lights in Maya and post effects. Getting rendered light fog looking and moving nicely takes quite a bit of time in 3D (because you're having to render entire sequences to preview the look) -- in 2D it's almost instantaneous and very easy to direct.

Hope this helps,
