OK, I think I've nailed the concept; introducing....

The King of Hearts.

A pair of Siamese twins with a twist; imagine two humans, sawn in half across the waist. Now turn one upside down and re-attach.

Voila:

http://www.thepolysmith.com/images/front.jpg

The king of hearts. Only twisted and grotesque, of course...

I'll post a concept up tonight when I get home.

Nice sketch. Just out of curiosity, though, how does this thing.... um... get rid of waste material?

This reminds me of the cat-dog cartoon.

yeah this one looks cool. I've been racking my brain and all i come up with is an ugly dude with a huge overbite and oversized teeth, whereas you come up with the king of hearts...

I love the top hat BTW. the costuming on the whole is good. Makes me think that the one on top is perhaps a ring master type guy and the one underneath is like the resident strong man or 'feats of strength' type guy.

Looking forward to the model.

It looks like it's going to be very detailed and i think the concept is just perfect.

Hey Sasquatch, I think your characters are some of the best, bar none, and they morph real good (I looked at your site - amazing!). I notice you're not shy of using triangles, pentangles & poles. Do you think the whole topology thing is overstated??

Damo, tell me you're not at work. Go home, dude, that's an order.

I choose banjos, in the square, at dawn. :D You may have the reach, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve...

@Crapstick: it all depends where the nasty little 5-siders are lurking; I'm not too worried if they're in flat areas; I'll usually do a polycleanup at the end of the modelling phase, and spend a little time on this until I'm happy with the layout. But on the whole, I don't really worry about them too much; they can be useful sometimes...

Mangled Poly
08-16-2003, 10:22 PM
simply amazing face keep going!

08-17-2003, 11:18 AM
sasquatch you rule man! Tell something more about creating this face? Face is all pure texture or is there procedural stuff? How long did you make texture and how did you do it? =) I want to learn something from you. Teach me teach me

superb modeling is this color head a rendering? the proportion of the torso looks strange for me shorten the torso a little bit they can share some organs - how they will spend a penny :)

sasquatch
08-17-2003, 09:15 PM
Last update today:

http://www.thepolysmith.com/images/Freak003.jpg

Torso a little shorter, musculature altered a bit, added waistcoat and colostomy bag. :D

Still haven't started un-symmetrifying; will probably be the last thing I do.

JamesMK
08-17-2003, 09:31 PM
:D Ah, that bag solves just about everything!

That aside, what's your general secret? How much modeling have you done in your life really? It really looks entirely effortless, which can only be because this is second nature to you, like doodling on a napkin...

Sas-

What is your secret? Over the past year your modeling/texturing skills have increased 100X. Is this just from working in the software more and more, or do you have some secret book that's telling you how to do this? :D The modeling is solid, and looking great.

I heard his secret is the xdugef modeling method.

really great model and skin shader

so how does he stand? the underguy always has
to do a handstand? also how does he go to the bathroom?

Goon
08-18-2003, 10:34 PM
thats what the bottle's for. But as for solid matter....just think of a certain South park episode.......

Nice stuff btw. Looks great.

sasquatch
08-19-2003, 01:46 AM
Wow, lots of replies. Quick q&a then...

lukx: face shader is all textures: some of it starts out as procedural noise and leather, which I bake into a texture file and edit in photoshop. The shader as a whole has been a long time in the figuring out; there's bits of Stahlbergs skin shader, velvet shaders, all sorts of crap in there. Runs at around 6 layers.

JamesMK: there's no secret. Well, there's the army of robot monkeys, but I'm not sure that counts. Sometimes I wish there was a 'make great artwork' button, but I guess that would take all the fun out of it. How much modelling? Loads of character models for games, and high poly stuff whenever I can squeeze it in...

mattregnier: shh, you know the rules; no one mentions 'the book'.
Mate, it's just practice and a very understanding girlfriend, who picks my work to pieces just when I think I've got it right. Damn her eyes :D

psumo: xdugef, huh? This is where I'm supposed to smile knowingly and exchange cryptic handshakes with the xdugef brotherhood, hmm? :D

How does the King of hearts stand? on all fours usually; I imagine him scuttling about like a lizard.. to facilitate this, i redesigned his arms a bit, lengthening them and giving him big skinny hands.

http://www.thepolysmith.com/images/Freak004.jpg

davemcd
08-19-2003, 02:47 AM
Looking very nice. So is his hat squashed from all the times he's the one upside down?

I think the bandaged section needs to be a little more irregular along its top and bottom edge (or is it more like a cumberbun / sash thing?) either that or give each of them a different belt. The belt could have a vertical strap which serves to help hold the colostomy bag in place and possible hold other trinkets and gadgets.

Cant wait to see more

davemcd

Now silly question but did you just tweak the top half face to make the bottom guy? I mean it look like similar topology but he's got a completely different personality to him. Nice work all up....

Personally i quite like the elongated arms and hands.

if he spends most of his time upside-down i think the pockets on the utility belt should be the other way up... otherwise everytime he went for stuff in em they'd fall out ;)

PS. i was going to suggest nipple piercings in my previous post ;). Also lovely musculature, very good anatomy.

Sweet Mother of Gwad it's me Da!!!!!

That is some great work you are pumping out and so damn fast too!!!! you are a machine!!!!!

Would his wee pouches be that way round though? if he opened them to buy himself a wee candy floss perhaps, all his money would fall out!!!!

maybe (keeping in line with the character) the pouches would be the other way round so he could open them in safty without the loss of vial pennies cause he looks like a man would would be kinda pissed if he couldn't get his candyfloss :P

Great work man, i would still be making the eyeball at this stage :)

Well I think I'm nearly done on the first modelling pass; now I'll start UVing and texturing. I reckon I'll come back and add details in later, but I think it's probably time to get cracking on the next stage.

I'm trying to imagine how this character is going to sit down, or walk/crawl. Would be fun to apply some form of 'wearing' keeping this in mind. Like muscles more evolved for the arms since they'll support the weight, gravity applied to the necklace...

Supergrand work S, amazing, just a thought, I'd put some imperfections at the zone where they are merged... And I wouldn't hide their scars. Although this is your work and it's great the way it is, I was just thinking about the X-Files episode, "Post-Modern Prometheus". I'd put some more tissue and scars on the place where they grew together... that could add some more grotesque to the scene, but hey, great work!

Your work is looking great ! as far as consructive crits you may consider some issues with the bottom guy as to how bieng upside down the majority of time will effect the gravity of his anotmoy maybe a longer more bent neck (having to look up all the time or out ) and so on

looking forward to more updates

bloody hell Sas, thats one bonkers model haha! Good to see some work from yerself again!

I've had a flick thru the 9+pages of posts and only read a few so scuse me if I repeat this but I like the way you rebuilt the bottom half of the model for a tougher, meatier physique - it'll make the final thing a bit more plausible as they'll look like they can hold that one handed pose more easily.

And with a little over 2.5 hours to go...I'm done. Not completely happy, as I didn't get time to rig the facial expressions but impressed I actually finished a challenge for once. Here's the King:

the SSS effect on the skin is to much(most visible on the bottom guy) it looks almost as he is luminos.
but the model is just WOW! definitely my fav in this challenge.

What can I say? That is some top-notch work, sir!

A little late for crits, but anyway: Looks like the top guy is holding on to that thing with a rather strange wrist angle, and the fingers aren't really grabbing it as much as one would... um... expect.

That aside - your work is really in a league of its own, I must say.
Excellent, period.

sasquatch i have a few questions.

1. can you post some full wireframe images of your model in that pose? anypose, i would just like to see some wire images, see just how much detail you put into them.

2. did you zbrush your model?

also there hands are amazing, they have a great big look to them. they remind me of gollums hands from lotr2towers. i love them big type of hands.

Wires as requested:

Levitateme: I only ended up using ZBrush as a quick way of creating texture maps; I'm still trying to figure my way around ZBrush, to be honest.

one more question sasquatch, what kind of binding did you use?

sasquatch

Smooth skinning plus blendshapes.

looks really great, however i dont quite like your final choice of camera angle / composition. I think that the wireframe shot you showed at the bottom actually shows off the character a lot better... you can see more of the bottom guys face and the top guy appear to look you 'more in the eye'

Also for some reason the hand being angled in looks a bit strange... i keep thinking it should be splayed outwards rather than inwards.... if you take the analogy of his hands as feet then a more comfortable pose would be with the feet / hands angled outwards (but hey they would also now be backwards.... )
It does look like you've done that deliberately to provide more balance in the center of gravity but it just strikes me as a bit odd...

oh and the floor looks too reflective to me for such a weathered looking texture....

But hey... i love it still a lot. I hope you do soem more renders of this one... i'd love a desktop.. especially if it looks like a billing poster for the 'freakshow'

I'm not keen on the render, I think the composition and the textures/materials let down the model.

As for the modelling, what can I say? I take my hat off to you. Wonderful work. :applause:

mv

same here. The modelling and posing is utterly excellent, but the compo/textures don't really do justice to your model.
Still great.

Right, I'll cut off my hands next time I think about rendering ;)

Seriously, I just didn't have time. Maybe I should've just left it untextured, but it's all good practice anyway.
