Looks great!!
Can we see a non subdivided mesh?
I think maybe the rear lights look a bit dark, but of course they could be tinted...
Personally I think the rims look a bit small, and maybe the car would a looked a little cooler with more low profiles and a few inches larger wheels.
The mesh looks very good...
Can we get a larger render of one of them, a little less compressed too?

Well I used sachform HDRI Only for reflecting environment. And for light i used 1 direct light set to intensity 0.3, and turned on skylight in GI setting in FinalRender Stage-1... the settings for skylight is 1.5 intensity white, 16 samples and 70 % quality of light :)
I hope I helped.

Very nice rendering indeed !!
The wheels also appear small to me ? And maybe a better aa could be fine. But definitely nice model/rendering !

excellent work, this is one of my favourite cars too, the colours work really well :)
the only thing that looks a little strange is the jagged edges around the rims on the black one, but I assume that's just render settings

Only crit. the tires are to bulgy, to much rubber but awsome:thumbsup:
oh damn what a paint job!!!! now seriously... PLEASE DO A TUTORIAL ON HOW TO GET SUCH AWESOME LIGHTING AND PAINT!!!!!!
your car really stands out, not from simply from detail but overall presentation. oh and i reckon the black one is super cool
edit: one crit is the lack of tread on the tires, pattern should be repeated more

Hi Sqwall,
The modelling, materials and particularly in the first image the lighting are really astonishing. The only crits in the car are minor things that have already been mentioned.
Now the only thing I would say, and maybe this was just a exercise in making a photorealistic car (and it's certainly that :p) in which case no worries, but a nice background that didn't detract but really set the car off would make this a really beautiful image in its own right and then I think there would be no question of it being front page material :).
Regardless, it's a really top job.

because otherwise i'd never have time to see any of these great threads.
lovely attention to detail here, it's really breathtaking.
i also like that you made it "for FUN" :buttrock:
hey i notice in your wireframe that those little grills on the front of the car are actually modelled in. i assumed it was a bump and texture at first. any way we can get a close up and a little info on how you went about making them? i know it seems like a silly thing to ask, but the method for modeling most of a car is fairly clear to me, i am interested in some of the smaller details.

Thanks guys I really appreciate your opinions
The body kit for the car is fictional I made it... so I called it CUSTOM tuning... the idea for the front fedners come from actual CUSCO racing car competting in gt300 series of 1999 JGTC
As I mentionet the wheels and tires are replicas such as the rear wing which is replica of BoMex wing I presume
the seats inside are sparco replica ... to be exact SPARCO FIGHTER seats :p
the exhaust is titanium HKS of course.
I will post the render of it later...
Once again thanks guys.

When I saw your initial mesh, I thought you had modeled with NURBS, because of the way the tesselation looked. But when I saw your non-subdivided mesh, I realized I was wrong. You must of have modeled this in maya and subdivided it in Max, yes? Maya's subd's don't tesselate like that...
AWESOME work, btw...

very nicely done modeling and render  absolutly beautiful rendering and modelling (overall) only crit is on the mirrors, they don't seem to go out far enough relative to there height. Also what is with the rear window wing? (from a driving stand point its pointless with allready having a rear spoiler, and from looks imo, just as pointless)

In rhino 3 i modeled the black version headlights , because i have'nt got many time to do them in max. :)

Since the kit is molded, I think the flares could use a little tweaking....They seem a little flat and they don't really flow with the bodylines....
I really don't like the tires, they look TOOO clean...The car itself can be reflective and shiny, and very showey (means car show material)...Anyways, the tires just look TOO perfect...Impressive that you modeled them, but I really don't think it's pulled off to perfection...
And if you think I'm trashing your model, my apologies...This is the best looking car model I've ever seen in my life...SERIOUSLY!!
Minus the tiny flaws that only I had a problem with, your car is absolutely stunning to say the least....You're the type of person who makes me want to uninstall XSI and quit school...

sCM redruM - you look experienced! admit that to make a car (in example for sale) likeable you must polish it 20 times at least :) generally in computer graphics everything is clean ^_^ and perfect - also perspective of sqwall's car is awesome. i'm just a fan of CG and don't see any defects :< hope also sqwall remodel it if there is anything he wants to remake. from a friends i know that good render takes days:eek: but it's ok:thumbsup:

Simply stunning, and quite possibly the best modelled car I've seen bar none.
Just to let you know, this link has just been published on scoobynet (http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs), so there may be a few Subaru nutters wandering along :D
The whole thing is just brilliant. If I can make a suggestion, how about changing the front lights to use clear lenses rather than the "rippled" that you've got on at the moment? The 22B used "rippled", but the 99 and 00 year cars had clear... I think they'd suit the general cleanness of the car.
I'm gobsmacked as to how good this is! And please can we have some more angles rendered? :D And maybe some tutorials?

I've been gawking at your images for awhile and was wondering a few things -
What reference images did you use? I can tell that those body pieces are not on any GC8 Impreza, and are custom fabbed (like the title says). I was wondering where you got the styling cues from. And, also, was wondering how much trouble it'd be for a tutorial?

First off, great work. It looks stunning. The best car rendering I've ever seen for sure...I could hardly tell it was modeled.
I'm no modeler, so I don't know the technical stuff... But if I may make a few comments..if you're trying to make it perfect.....
1) I think the roll cage tubes look too small. I believe the FIA specs are 38mm OD..work that out to whatever scale you are working in...
2) The X bars on the cage don't look like they are welded together. It looks like two rendered bars that are clipping each other.
3) The rear window is too clear, no defroster lines or anything.
4) from the rear view, we can see inside the car, and we can see that there is, in fact, no B pillar.
5) The missing valve stems, which has already been mentioned.
6) The tires are a little clean, no molding hairs, or sidewall markings. Maybe you could put a bump texture on top of the modeled tire, add some markings, scuffs, etc. That would make them look nice.
7) The exhaust tip looks off for some reason. Maybe the inside is just too well lit or something.
Again, very excellent job. I hope to see an updated version soon. :)

Sqwall, can you please tell us what kind of material did you use for the car's body. Was is a simple FRAdvanced with a simple colour and some reflections? Did you use any Falloff maps? Please describe the material in detail if possible and if it isnt a secret of course. What is the exact name of the HDRI used on first 2 screens? (I would like to achieve similar results with FR1)

first time posting.....I really like it. The only thing that I think is maybe the wheels look a little too cg compared to the rest of the image. But other than that I really really like it.
Cool.

Congrats
i'm actualy modeling an BMW Z4. It is not yet finished but i'll render it with FinalRender stage 1 soon.
My question is simple why not using the HDR as the only source light + 1 or more spots only for re-enforcing specular only ??
Theoricaly this should give an perfect lightning ?
Thanks in advance

something doesn't look quite right with the tire material to me, it may just be me, but it looks so close that the little bit of difference from reality is almost annoying.... if you know what i mean

That model is incredible! I can't make anything good, so I look at a lot of other people's work, and that is the most realistic CG car I've ever seen! (that I know of)
I find it inspiring, yet, it makes my work look so bad. :( Good job.
Love to see more pics.

Very Impressive! If I was a none 3d person I would take it as a real photo...
...Help! I am in the proccess of finishing a car myself modeled in Max 5.1. Using the same lighting technique you are using. Only problem I keep running into are the head and brake lights. You may have used the method I have been trying but I am not sure. If you dont mind I could use some advise on the head and brake lights.

The car is awesome!

As with my previous comments on some cars here at cgtalk, I'd like to point out a thing that seems to be overlooked by many artists - the basic shape of the car, or proportions if you like.
Good renders (in this case really great) are far more common than accurate models.
As a car nut, the first thing that ruins a picture for me is inaccurate shapes. I'm not saying it has to be perfect, it just has to look "right". It's sometimes easy to see mistakes in models when you haven't even seen the original. There are certain "rules" as to how a car is designed. If you wander away without thinking, it could often look wrong...
Study this picture:
http://www.impreza.nu/ssi2/expo/view_photo.php?full=1&set_albumName=22b&id=bild12
Then look at the first page of this thread.
For example, assuming Sqwall's model has the main body shell intact, being a customized car, there are some things that looks weird. First of all, the windshield. It seems to be too flat, leaning to much and doesn't flow good into the roof. The A-pillars are also too wide. Staying in the same area but moving to details, the wipers looks way too thin and need more detail. These are all basic rules - there's no real car looking like that.
Also compare the hood, scoop and headlights.
Another thing is when you do custom parts, they have to look believable. I think Sqwall has done that well.
Now, some people might find this less important, but try to be aware of it, and be critical. I'm quite upset when there's 3 pages of "It's pefect!" in some threads. Perfect (whatever that is?) means it has to be accurate in shapes, and you as a viewer have to consider that.
Sorry about all this :shame: Just trying to rasie the bar a bit ;)
PS. Umm, yes, I do own an Impreza myself... ;)

No problem man. I love the critiques. See the other versions of my subaru. The links are at the bottom of my post. Maybe you will like them more. I love your work on your subaru. There are a few flaws but keep goint it is still a WIP so I am saving the crits for the Final.
I love to hear that you have an actual subaru. Can you shot me some photos of the backlights. Because I realy want to see how the interior of the light is set because I done my by inprovisation.

shaddix, the parts I described looks the same on all GC8 Impreza's ;)
Sqwall, I've seen your othere versions and they do look great! But I can't see you've made any changes in the areas I described.
I'd really like to hear what you think of my Impreza model now, rather than when it's done. It's now that I'm making changes ;)
I'll try to mail you some images of the tail lights later :)

I think you could put some slighly lower profile tires on it.. Not realy low profile just a bit more then they are at the mo.

Ok man . First try to highen the smooth result use 2 or even 3 levels of smoothing this will improove the refls. Tighten a little the window gums. Look at you subaru. The rear window gum shoud be more tight. Put the gums a little outside. Now they are looking like textures... if they are not aniway. Do some interiors of the lights. I can see that u used textures. This will improve the total 3d feel of the vehicle. Fix the grey subaru wing it looks like he is weldet to the back of the car. Front bumper looks a bit more extended. The wipers looks a bit wierd. And there is not a detail at all. He He like mine. The actual car interior looks a bit strange. There are no seat belts (maybe this is an WIP issue) Do not use texture for tires. Try to make them all in 3D. The pattern and all. It will look more real. There is no Rear View mirror in the car.
Well this is not all but I think that I overdone myself here.
