View Full Version : Photorealism: Nokia 7250 phone

Hey!

This is my latest image. It's basically an exercise in photorealism and multipass (Leeloo!) rendering/compositing.
I used XSI 3.5 and Photoshop for this one.

The models are 100 % sub-d and the final scene contains 174 340 polygons.

All textures are hand painted (except the numbers, logos and display image) and some parts of the phone are purely procedural shaders. If I do something like this again I will use a lot more procedurals.

It was rendered @ 1440 x 1152 with Image Based Lighting in different layers (phone color, reflection, shadow, front shadow, ground, stone color, stone shadow) so it's kinda hard to give you the rendertimes. It wasn't too bad though.
The final PSD-file had 16 layers.
I used Photoshop to fix the reflections, do a slight bloom effect, some very subtle chromatic abberation and a bunch of other stuff.

I did a project description page (kinda like a mini tutorial) which can be found here > http://www.lowend.se/nokia7250_project.html
You can also find the highres-version and wireframes on that page.

Thanx goes out to Simon Pickard, Ola Madsen and Michael Johansson for their support and critique!

Good model, but I feel that the grain added to the image is a bit too high. Also, there's something that doesn't feel right about the reflection in the face. Usually the glare would obscure the "Nokia" in the display, and rather than being blurry spots of color the reflection would be a rather crisp image of whatever it was reflecting (say the sky for instance).

Nice job but i think your lighting is off and the focus is too soft.

I second the grain being too "grainy", it's alright near the bottom of the phone, but at the top above the speaker it's way too strong. I agree on the fact that the reflection seems strange too.

Aside from these points it's very good indeed!

Hey guys!

Thanx for your comments!

I will fix those in the flyover I'm doing right now.

About the grain: The plastic of the phone actually has a grainy quality like that. I added some film grain on top of it all in post and maybe that was a tad too much. The textures are much more visible in the high res pic mentioned above.

Photorealism??? Hmmm... Maybe.

When i look at the picture i see "it's cg work..." good cg work but not photorealism (i think!).

The reflection seems a bit off (specularity). The LCD screen also don't look very realistic from this angle...hmm...

But THUMBS UP  for the modeling!!!

Youth: OK, let's call it realism then. :-)

Its the shadow i think. The phone appears to be floating.

Maybe the light should be coming from the other direction.
But all in all though, its a nice job.

I think with a little photoshopping you could do a lot. Try some more contrast and perhaps tweaking the saturation, and neutrals a bit and youll get it closer to photoreal.

Really nice model!

I agree that there is a bit too much grain, and i think the main lightsource should come from the top left corner, casting a shadow down to the right in front of the phone. That way I think you would get rid of the floatin effect.
About the display... someone said that the reflection was weird, but its a colordisplay, right? So there's an image in the background? Wouldn't it be nice to put some glow to it? Like a display light.

Håll uppe det bra arbetet! :P

good job. The phone itself is very real appearing.
The material (blue) is great.

The fingerprints on screen are nice addition though they look slightly off. Could very well be that in real life they are exactly like that.

What strikes me most are:

- the background image in the phone. Make it pixelated as it would be in real phone. (128x128 ?)

- the ground material is could have bit more variation. It is also stretched beyon its resolution. Are the stones in the map or models? Now the ma seems to be a wall map put on much smaller surface -> scale is weird.

- the shadow is wrong. the phone seems to float now. it looks much better in:

http://www.lowend.se/nokia_img/nokia_final_nopost.jpg

- noticed the stones are cg. something in them bothers maybe slightly too blurred.

good work.

Not too bad. But not photorealistic. But, as mentioned above, the spec is way off. Also, I am not sure that the textures are really working as being photorealistic. The are good, but not photo quality. I might be that the resolution is to low, or the scale you painted with is off.

The weirdness on the glass is also not helping. This looks totally fake. I would try something else for the reflection. Not a bad start though. Good luck.
