View Full Version : Hip's got a root joint complex...
MaTaDoR 08-11-2003, 02:38 AM what is it that determins whether the model stays planted when the hip is moved ( in whatever axis ) vs it acting as a root and moving the whole model?
In other words ive got a few models that ive obtained online (free, joe, troll and one purchased from the animators gym) and on a few the feet stay planted when I move the hip which is what I want but on others the whole model moves when I do the same thing and im looking to change that..
tip?

That means there is IK on the legs. If there is IK on the legs and its not parented to the COG, the feet will remain planted.

That has to do with how the control hiearchy is organized. For instance what you said you want is to move one control (center of gravity) but the feet stay planted. In this case the controllers for the feet are not grouped under or constrained to the center of gravity control, this is a pretty normal control hiearchy. Look at the hiearchy in the outliner of the rig and you'll see what I mean. Now most rigs also have a main uber control. This is so you can rotate, translate, etc..... the entire character at once. So to change this on the rigs in question you'll have to move the feet controls out from under this uber control or break any constraints. But depending on how control hiearchy is actually constructed moving things around in it could have adverse results.

When I move the center of gravity the whole body moves which is good, but it also happens when I move the HIP...
Im trying to move the hip with the feet planted, here's a pic of how its parented..

what you can see on the pic is that ive moved the HIP controller back and the IK stayed in its default which is what I DONT want to have happen..

man ive just got that bad luck sometimes, ive changed nothing for that to happen and everything seems to be parented the way its suppose to but yet this happens...
ive got the original file from the CD and its the same story, things that ive animated before where it worked fine seem to have this bug going on too.. im thinking its the same problem I had with the ik joe where something jus just stops working after its been fine for awhile...

Yes, it's Maya 5. With their new FK/IK blending they have added some features that are turned on by default. Just go under the Animation menu set, and deselect Enable IK/FK control. That should get our regular hip control back.
Cheers,
Paul
