View Full Version : car crash or crumple zones
redfox 08-11-2003, 01:49 AM HI everyone,
I need to come up with a way to make a car crash with dents and damage using 3d max.
The scene involves cars being tossed out of a tunnel by a trex size beast. I have created a rig in max to propel the car down a road and hit a triangle ramp to flip the car, much like its done in real life using the built in havok system in max. Now fliping the car is not the problem. I need to find a way to make the parts that hit the ground crumple and smash down.
If anyone know a way that would be very helpful
Thanks

Soft-body dynamics. Tweaked to hell, it could work. How many parts are we talking here? 5? 300? If it's a small ammount, i'd be inclined to hand-animate it. If it's a ton, I'd go with something like soft-bodies. Also, you man want to play with that grouping function reactor has. Can't remember what it's called, but you can set an impact energy level to break to joined pieces apart. That's a really cool effect if done right. You can have reactor motion-interpolate the chunks so that one force can effect them first(ie, keyframes, controllers, or even particles), then have reactor take over the rest of the motion later on.
Just some thoughts. Perhaps with a better understanding of the scene, we could brainstorm a bit more.

Fox, in the next few days I will be doing something very similar myself. Not only crashes, but I also have to design cars that look like they got shot up by bullets.
I have been thinking of startin with something simple at first, like:
When vehicle is hit by enough bullets do -->
A. Replace car uv map with damage lookin map
B. Insert extra polys where windows should be & animate them spining towards the ground
C. Play glass breaking & bullet bouncing sounds
BTW, I saw some of your work earlier today and was quite impressed.

So I can across a plugin call Object Deform For Max 4.0...I does what I want just not realtime and not with reactor. So if anyone knows any other plug-ins like that let me know thanks

Red, what is wrong with using the Morph tool?

i recently had to do the same thing with a dumpster getting smashed in stages.
the morpher works excellently!
just make the stages, key your targets!

i figure morph targets would work well(+ a couple of particle systems for glass and whatnot), but the soft body dynamics idea from 3dzealot could be interesting to try out ...

Thanks for the help everyone. All the ideas are good. but I was trying to get something more reatime or simulated...as far as letting it do or hit whatever and give results. 3dMax needs a "look good button" LOL j/k by the way I have come up with a way to do it. Using reactor to do the crash, then add object deform plugin to cruch the car (against a plane just above the groud), then runing reactor again and it works very well.
