View Full Version : Character 2D: Mushroomhead
FordPrefect 08-11-2003, 01:47 AM Just got a Wacom and painter7. This is my first attempt at painting, and I came up with this guy. Comments, and critiques, especially about how this could be improved, are welcome.

I am not sure that there is a whole lot of critasizm avaliable for this piece, it is hard to give suggestions on improving on stylized work. Basically it looks good. What I would suggest is putting more time into a piece and trying something more than a simple stylized cartoon then asking about some specific areas that are causing you trouble.

jrwells,
thanks for the input, but what if I want to do simple stylized cartoons? Should I look elsewhere for feedback on them?

If you want to do stylized work and get crits on them that is great, but asking for crits and how to improve your style is way to openended. Having said that, for this piece I guess the asshead comment was constructive, or so it appears from the discussion.

There's nothing wrong with stylized cartoons. The problem is that it's easy to fool yourself into thinking cartoons are all you want to do when really you lack the confidence to branch out and study other forms. I LOVE drawing cartoons but I've found that practicing/studying other techniques and styles actually IMPROVES my cartooning and helps me develop my own style.
I am not making ANY judgments of your skill; after all, I've only seen one of your works (you could be a closet Rembrandt for all I know). If this is a style you have developed, then you do need to specify what should be critiqued because, frankly, any crit offered could be parried with "well, that's the style."

Your right, and so is jrwells. And as jrwells stated, the feedback I did get was actually constructive, though at first it took me off guard. Then it turned to an echange that made me reexamine the character.
I am a complete novice, and was debating wether or not to post, thinking I should wait until I had something better. But I am glad I did.
And I never said I didn't want to do anything more ambitious than cartoons, I just would like to be able to display my cartoons as well as anything else I do. Thanks for the feedback, I know a little better how I should present the next piece I decide to submit.
Again thanks to all for your comments, even the "ass head" comment.
Hey! I like your work and you helthy sence of humor! Continue posting your work, at least something fresh will appear in this gallery. Everybody (and I myself) are trying to create a perfect world, drawing for public, forgeting what's actually in our harts.

Good for you for posting. If only the best posted their work here than nobody would have a reason to crit. And that would make this a very boring forum. By all means keep them coming, it is always fun to see a novice develope his/her skills, and you do seem to take crits the way they should be taken. Just a word of advice, there is nothing as important to a artist as a person who will tell you the truth about what they think of your work. Friends just ramble on about how great it is, but luckily we have strangers here who arn't looking to pat your ass(head) and stroke your ego. It truely is the best way to improve. Wait a minute, on second thought the most important thing to an artist is a medium, so forget everything I just said.
