i need help into knowing how to assign jpeg file to object!!
i am totally new to MAYA interface so can someone show me step by step? thank you all in advance!!!

I could be an ass and say RTFM...or STFW...but anyway::
open either the hypergraph or multilister....create the type of shader you want to use..open its attributes...where it says "color"..click on that square to the right...when that opens up the add shader panel...choose "file" (textures tab)...then just search for your jpeg...and done! (yes...there is more to it if you want it to map correctly..but thats not what he/she asked ;) )

but i got another problem is tt how you assign the jpeg material onto the object at the same time you can view it in the view port?

click shading and enable hardware texturing, I believe...
