View Full Version : Sketch Dump: 1st post here, some toy car stuff, (big DL)
Scott Robertson 08-10-2003, 05:03 PM Hello All,
I see some familiar names over here, looks like a great forum. Feng turned me onto posting some work over here. It has been unfortunate that I have continued to be swamped with too much work. I hope this post will be the start of some worthwhile participation on this forum. All I can share at this point are some sketches from the book "How to Draw Cars the Hot Wheels Way" that is nearing completion. This is why most of the designs are so tweaked and drawn in an obvious toy car proportion. Hope you enjoy. More info on the book as it nears publication date.
Here they are, most are small thumbnails, no particular order.

Here are three more sketches and a little traditional media sketch, minus the Photoshop spin blur on the wheels! The color piece here is the end result of a detailed traditional media step by step demo.

Here are a couple of Larry Wood designs I did overlays of before rendering them in Photoshop. You can see the last two images here are screen shots and part of a 20 page digital rendering step by step.

Oh, wow. Scott Robertson on CGTalk. This is certainly an enourmous honor. I can't belive we got you AND Feng all in a week.
I certainly hope you will stick around and post your work whenever you have a free moment. I'd also like to envite you to perhaps stop by our critiques section and offer some comments there. An artist of your mastery is always such an inspiriation here at CGTalk. I've been following your work for years now, and I am quite glad to see that you've finally found yourself here.

Refreshing to see that apart from the butt kissing of an artist, someone dares to critic his work. Yep, the windshield seem slanted to me, strange, specially knowing that this artwork will be in a book that teaches you how to draw cars.
Great work of this guy. Not perfect as others seem to think, tho.

wow this is awsome..!!:D
great work!!
only tweak those perspective flaws, and those shadows are really of.. blur them a little.. caus this takes a lot of attention away from the car.
but still great! i like the sketches best:thumbsup:

hey, as far as i know this is more or less a critique forum.. and Id say that if this were a perspective error it would be a fairly big problem for a book thats teaching perspective.. I have total respect for scott robertsons art, and have been following it for some time, so im curious if this actually is an rror or if there is some other explanation

That's cool, PaxtonGerrish. Crits are good, and I actually agree with your point. It was just the line of question marks came across to me as a bit bitchy and smug, that's all.

the art is great, the cars are great, hot wheels are great !!!!!
i really like the latest hot wheels to come out .. the hwy 35 stuff (35 years of hot wheels?) the new wheel design and paint on these cars are simply stunning.
designing new hot wheels cars would have to be one of the coolest jobs in the world.

Are you talking about TRD_10.jpg ? I don't think the windshield is wrong if you look at the pencil drawing. It is just very unusual to have a 'wide angle' shot on a fast moving car...
please let us know if you mean another image,

ppl here have SUCH a high level work ...level that it's gonna take me a while to post something, i'm not dat brave yet.
and i almost NEVER see any mistakes in their work (the pros')
and as much as i would Luv to see someone make a mistake so we'll know they are human too, i come up with an answer...
the wheels are Turned, that is why the vanishing lines are do not go to the same vanishing point.
so i guess ...dat's it.....

Hello everyone.
Thanks for the warm welcome.
PaxtonGerrish,
Nice eye. That's what I get for doing a quick overlay of someone elses drawing, still no excuses, I should have corrected it before throwing on some color. The sketches that are done for production work tend to be pretty loose like this one. It is not in the book in the how to draw cars section at least. It is just another Photoshop rendering example. I will try to not let you down with my own book. Again, nice eye, keep up the good work.
Thanks again to the rest of you, I'll try to be around more often.
In fact I will post a work in progress piece in a few minutes in a new thread....it's very un-car like, and I think the perspective is even a bit more correct!
Cheers,
PaxtonGerrish

And yes, it's VERY nice to see some creative critique, like that from PaxtonGerrish, and it's nice to see the artist take it as cool as Scott.
