meatsack 08-10-2003, 09:29 AM this is my third attempt at doing high poly stuff...
Those wheels where a pain in the ass to make!!!! Just had to say that sorry ;)
Hopefully this will not get buried as quick as my last post :)
Not much to show yet......using max 5.

Looks cool so far :]
Do you got sketches? Or how do you do this? Is it your design? Where do you got your "inspiration" from? :scream:
I think If you post updates frequently nobody will forget this.

hey thanks for the comments.
This is from some of the leaked concept art from quake 4.
I'll try to post progress shots as much as possible.

some more work..started on one section of the body

ewerybody, inspiration comes from the person/s on this forum, as well as my friends. It's good to have a friend who's doing the same thing you are and you can bounce ideas and techniques off of each other..helps more than anything really.
I'm thinking of redoing those tires...something about them really bugs me..anyone have any suggestions? Or some cool ideas for the tread? I want something like tank treds, but made of rubber.
thanks.

How exactly did u make the wheels. A simple lofted or extruded shape with a path conform or what, it looks great absoulutly great. I think the links should be a little bigger between the wheels but they look great. One suggestion as well is too use the light tracer to preview your model. It will look alot better and easier to see but very good i love it

it took me forever to get those #$@#$@#$ wheels together...the process is simple really.
I took a cylinder, extracted a face from it, built one of the links from that face, then Duplicated the links around the center of the cylinder so they would all fit correctly. The problem came when the sides didn't match up for "welding" seems..so I had to keep going back and adding, moving verts etc.
If I keep looking at those wheels I'll be forced to redo them..I'm gonna leave it alone for a while..hehehe
Yeah, I usually use light tracer, but I havn't figured out how to get specularity to show up correctly. Could be because i'm useing the skylight?

Nice concept.

actually the specular component is easy. Just creast a normal light with like a low multiplier (depending on distance from model) maybe .2 oee.3 will work and turn off the diffuse component in the advanced properties rollout. You can even include and disclude objects u dont want to have specular highlights its great. But ummm yeah...ill respond later with more crituques but hahahahaahahh gj@!!

I can't take credit for the concept, I'm only modeling what I see. I try to make some changes here and there, but the original idea goes to the very gifted artist/s who did the concept work.
Yes, please post or email me with any lighting tips you have using light tracer, I try to play around with the settings etc, to get a good and fast render, but I can't get the results I'm really looking for. Any tips would be great! thanks.

looks like a good start, but im gona comment on the design of the thing.
for starters the lower foot hold thing in between the wheels is kina useless lookin. with the position of the top on, it would be really uncomfy and hard to use the lower one. so either remove it or angle it out the same as the top one.
the back mud guard is lookin too close to the wheel, try bringing it out a bit, should make it more realistic (sorta anyway!)
should look pretty rugged when its done, keep up the hard work!

Added a better render above.
Yeah I agree with the foot bars..they are kinda useless...I'll move them around and see what happens.
Yeah, the wheel wells need some work too so the wheels fit better in there, I'll work on that as well...thanks for the comments

Another inprogress shot..almost finished with the back end..I just wish it looked like it had hours of work in it..It looks too simple..I guess I can add more details once I get all of it modeled.
As always C&C are welcomed.

reworking the driver area..so ignore that part ;)

wow i really like this, i can tell alot of hours were put into the model because of all the little details, dont complicate it too much. And even though i like the tires they jsut dont seem very rubbery. i think if u try beveling the edges heavily in the area where each piece faces the next (hope tht makes sense) almost to where theres no space inbetween each part, that would look awsome. really cool model btw

thanks Louman, Yeah I don't like the tires at all, I'm going to redo them, I'm just keeping them in there for placement right now.
I'll post some more shots after I make some more progress.
I guess I've been looking at this too long, but to me it seems pretty boring, as if it doesn't have enough detail...I guess it's best to wait and make that decision when it's finished ;)

Looking good, nice detail.
On a technical note, the bit the pistons on the bumper connect to should be a cylinder so that it can rotate round when the pistions go in and out, otherwise it wont move at all. it looks pointless, but there is no harm in that.
the gun housing is good.

I'll revisit the piston thing when I go back in and add some details.
here are some shots of the cannon.

And a crappy render of the body, I just wish it didn't take so long to render, so I could set up the lighting better..Does any one know if I can render stuff as boxes? Just so I can get an idea of how my lighting will work?

One of the things that I found that eats up render time is the blur setting in the Render Scene pop up.
Uncheck the apply for both Object Motion Blur and Image Motion Blur and that will help some what.
Give it a try! :)
