View Full Version : Booleans from Hell
TheWriter 08-10-2003, 08:03 AM I noticed something, if I so much as just go to the boolean's menu, I get like a hundred new edges over my model. Even before the division? I've been told max's booleans suck but this is horrird. However, I believe that these edges may actualy be already there, we just dont see em while modeling?
I think as a test I did a preview before and after and the edges that I saw added from the boolean menu were there anyway.
I just want to re-confirm this.
Is there a way to hide these new edges?

Hey there,
depending on the object type you'd be working with, you can either hide them away or remove them, clean your mesh in other words. But it's way better imho to actually not use booleans, for this exact same reason, and model everything yourself, you'll end up with a lot less unneeded geometry, cleaner mesh, and what's more it'll make you practice your modeling skills : )
Booleans tend to result in sloppy geometry, using a lot of unwanted / unneeded extra vertices and edges, unless you use a specific plugin for this.

and what plugin or script would that be?

yeah MAX booleans add all kinds of slop and random verts to a model, but don't let that turn you off booleans forever.
if u have some extra time, download the demo of power booleans from nPower software (http://www.npowersoftware.com/booleans/booleans.html) as those guys got max booleans right! that will give you a whole new perspective on how booleans can be in max :)
