View Full Version : Exaggerated Cartoon Animation
FalseCathedral 09-20-2009, 10:14 PM Figaro is a aspiring actor who has been called in to do a TV commercial casting for a new "textured milk product". He is an endearing energetic individual who is determined to get the role, regardless of what the situation may bring. Unfortunately for poor Figaro, the new "textured milk product" hasn't gone through sufficient food quality testing....
I probably should have posted a few earlier playblasts on this sooner, but here is what i have done so far. Most facial/eyes/hands haven't been animated.

did a test render to take a break from tweaking.
i'd really love some C&C on this...it's hard to animate in a vacuum!

Coming along nice...
It reads very well. I've watched it over and over and it still makes me smile.
On frame 163 there is a pop in the hip (I'm sure you're still ironing it all out, just pointing it out in case you missed it). Also around 340 when he beginning to raise the glass and raise the body it appears robotic somewhat because he doesn't raise his torso until his arm has finished raising. I think if you overlap the animation and begin the raising of the torso before the arm comes to a stop it would be more fluid.
Very impressive though (I can appreciate it more because I'm not good at animating at all)
Keep up the great work.

Thats looking really nice - love his facial expressions!
Make sure you go through and fix his right elbow - it seems to wobble about a bit (the downside of using IK)
Also I thought it might be interesting if the vomit blasted him up into the air rather than him going up and then vomitting?
Keep it up!

thanks for the comments!! i wasn't sure if this animation was so average that nobody really could find anything that good or bad with it.
FrodoNZ, i love that idea of the vomit blasting him up! :) when I have time, i'll def. try to make that happen!

mmmmm do you know what i think? i think that it'snt enough exagerated. yes because you did very good things like pose but i think that the "level" of exageration is some time good some time to low. And i thiik that sometime some movement are too slow and the bouncing of the body to hard

this is kinda an update...
while taking some time to "reflect and rethink" this animation, i made the logo that will appear at the end, which still needs some tweaking.
but lo, here it is.

Everything is good but the start frame is kinda wonky with the foot jus being out there its like im expecting him instead of being surprised by his entrance.
here are some of my thoughts an what i see
1. step in is good
2.the second pose to get him closer to the cup seems off balance
there is no opposing action then a reactions
3. grabbing the cup is a nice pose
4.drinking pose is good
5. rubbing belly is good
6. the jump up is hmm i cant put my finger on it but seems to work
7. the landing is very off balance i think at that extreme pose he would have fell on to his butt
8. after the land that pose should be a bit more hunched over its to linear, part of his back is but the over all shape is not
9. when he gets up you have ik pop on his right hand
hope that helps cheers

thanks for the comments! looks like this might end up being a good animation if I'm able to make all the changes suggested! hope to have another revision in the next day or two.

well...it's been some months since my last update, but this animation was really bugging me so i broke it out the other day and have been hammering away on it. i think it has potential!!! it will be funny! i swear!
i've worked the middle part entirely...it flows a lot more. here's the file: CLICK (http://www.abramhodgens.com/pub/MILK_08 - ULTRATWEAK2.mov)
i hope someone is still interested in this. it's still in rough animation mode...not doing details much yet (no hand animation has been done...savign that for very last) and the puke part isn't animated.

feels like it needs more follow thru, you can tell where most of your main keys are. always try to make everything flow so its hard to find your keys. still great work though, keep it up.

Hi,
I recommend you not to use the Ik in this shot. You can feel the Ik in all the shot and it is not very pretty. You will notice that is much better to polish !

Christian.

Thanks for the comments!
For this update I've spent a lot of hours smoothing the motion out and adding detail.

thanks for the great advice! I used a mix of IK and FK...i'm assuming the parts that suck are when his arms are in IK. :( I'll go back and try and make sure the arcs are beautiful.
I really like your demo reel - acting is superb and motion is spot on! I'd love to see what your reel was like before you added all the Planet 51 shots you worked on. I also think your website is nice and to the point. I don't care for portfolio sites that you have to dig for 5 min just to see the portfolio! ;)
This animation is a big test/exercise for me. I'm amazed how much time i've spent on it, and kinda discouraged when I think, "for all this time i'v worked on it, it's not even very good!" haha, maybe wrong way to think about it...i've learned a lot! I feel like I've done about as well as I can on it...i've just re-done the entire middle part of it (sleeted 200 frames, deleted all the keys) becuase i felt like it turned to a garbled mess. I hope i didn't do the same wrong things twice. I think I want to move on to a new exercise, as i'm not sure how much more I'll learn by redoing this over and over. Either way, i've had a lot of fun on this!

Thank you very much for your words! :)
Before working on Planet 51, I was working in video games animation. I'll try to find my old reel and put it on the web. I learned a lot making Planet 51. There were so much talented people !!
I think your last update is much better now. And don't worry about the final result. We all have to learn. I did a lot of test before finish something that I liked.
The best thing you can do, is to finish your test, and learn with your troubles.
I'm sure you're going to think about the Ik-fk , before starting your next shot ;)
