View Full Version : Bump Map on Mirrored UVs
treatment 08-10-2003, 02:05 AM I just UV mapped half of my model then I mirrored it. So the UVs are on top of each other which works great for color maps but when I apply a bump map to it the bump map on the mirrored side bumps in the wrong direction. Like on the right side white is up and black is down and on the left black is up and white is down.
Is there a way around this? Or should I just trash the idea of using mirrored UVs if I'm going to use a bump map?
Oh, and I'm using maya 5

Why did you mirror your UVs? Just like a model, a texture should never be symmetrical :)

So I didn't have to paint the arms and hands 4 times (it's got 4 arms) and legs twice.
No people aren't completely symmetrical but sometimes doing twice as much work (or 4 times) isn't worth it.
But I think I'm goint to have to if I want to use a bump map.:banghead:

This sounds like a limitation in Maya. Some renderers do not have this flip-bump issue, some do. Perhaps another renderer?

Did you try reversing the normals on the side of the model that has the inverted bump? I don't know if this is "proper" but it's worked for me so far.
