View Full Version : Sound is so slow!

When I put sound into the video sequence editor, it is so slow! Scrubbing it hardly does anything, and often crashes. I have a good computer so I don't know what's wrong.

Also, when I try to render something out from the video sequence editor, it is always quiet.

It is always better to convert your audio files to raw PCM (.wav file) before importing them to the sequencer.

PCM?

I tried converting an .mp3 to a .wav file (16 bit in Audacity) and the file gets bigger, and it still goes slow. Do I need to buy a good sound card? I'm just using my integrated. However, I did lip syncing in lightwave without any problems on an older computer.

Have you tried use the Proxy feature, found in the Sequencer buttons window, for the video aspect of your project? Maybe using a proxy for the video will relieve enough of the cpu load to allow for faster audio processing. I'm not exactly sure, though, just a guess.

The size of your files may also be an issue.

I don't have any problems - have you tried both sound-HD and sound-RAM? I use .wav files. most of my animations are 2-6 minutes long. I have a separate hard drive too... I think that makes a difference too. Let the OS and program do it's thing, and pull your data files from a 2nd HD. Pretty simple thing to try, with 500GB drives coming in around 50-60 dollars.
what are you using codec-wise for your output mux? My sound is just voice, so I use 96kbps mp3.
I don't do lipsync/etc. I didn't know you could scrub with audio playback... where do I turn that on? I always click the audio sync button, then just play on the timeline.

define "good computer" - mine's a q9550 2.83 quad overclocked to 3.3, with 6gb ram in vista 64 (use 32b Blender).

I have a quad core 2.4 ghz 4Gb Ram Nvidia Geforce 9500
It's not top of the line, but it plays unreal tournament 3 with maximum settings and 35 bots without any slowdown.

I know what you mean about setting it to sync and hitting play. It just skips a lot of frames.

I don't know much about different sound files. So I don't know the answer to your question.

Yeah, you can scrub with audio playback. It's just so slow I don't know how anyone gets it done. My guess is they go more by the wave visual.

have you tried changing the preferences relating to sound and the VSE?:
