View Full Version : Character Painting in Photoshop Problems
FireForce 09-19-2009, 07:15 PM I've done a few tutorials and even bought a few books on painting in photoshop. The problem I'm having is coloring. I had figured out that the key is the opacity settings, I have more control when I adjust the opacity settings manually then relying on pressure sensitivity with a tablet. Although when I do it manually you can noticed when I'm changing shades from lighter to darker etc which on one tutorial which I had found on CG Society it worked out perfectly although with practice that is :) Are there any tutorials out there that some may know of for a beginner to get more of a stronger hold on painting in photoshop ? It appears that some can go into photoshop and whip something out pretty good in :30 to :40 minutes. I have a theory that previous painting experience helps but some just know how to get the tools in photoshop to work out so beautifully.

I think this is really the key. Someone who can paint in real life is likely to pick up a piece of software like Photoshop very quickly. While painting with real paints on a canvas is a somewhat different experience, the actual theory of applying paint and mixing colour and such is more or less the same, whether it's digital or real life.
A good artist could simply use the paintbrush tool and paint an amazing painting in Photoshop, so essentially, it's not so much Photoshop that you need to learn, it's how to paint. Sure, you could probably find some books and tutorials out there (unfortunately I don't know of any myself to recommend, but I am sure they exist), but my own personal advice would be to take a painting class. If you want to be good at painting, learn to paint. It's not the tools, it's the theory of the process itself.

I suppose I answered my own question :) Thank you for replying.
Although if anyone has any suggestions for me\anyone that at the time can't take
any painting classes, maybe self teach yourself to paint I would be interested.

I'm having quite the same problem. What i found so far is just experiment, try things.. Since i'm not used to using colour at all (my previous experience with art where my own pencil sketches all over my things) i really have a hard time trying. But i can also see some improvements, and if it's up to me, those will never go away :)
I also think a colour theory book wouldn't hurt, but i haven't tried so yet.

True I find myself never stop learning when it comes to this type of work. Although I confess to have not drawn in a looong time despite having most the tools right at my finger tips, I can only blame myself for not using the pencil and paper more. With a lot of things you sometimes never forget, you thought you would forget it's like riding a bike. A color book would probably be good, but sometimes a tutorial can be just as good but that depends.
