I have a black and white grid and want to put the white part as a transparent without having to bother selecting. Any way to do that?

One way is to change the layer blending mode to Multiply.

I think my way was different but that did it, thank you.

Trying to think of what way might be different.

Maybe what you meant about having to select wasn't "having to use any kind of selection" but rather "having to select every single square and spend half the day". If so, there are ways to select based on color.

- Use the magic wand and turn off "contiguous" on the control panel
- Select: Color Range

Another way would be to duplicate the color data as a mask. My favourite new (to me) way:

- select all
- copy
- create layer mask
- alt-click on the mask icon in the layer list to display the mask in grayscale.
- paste
- alt-click again to show layer
- apply levels and invert as needed

another cool way is use 'Blendi if' plus its non-destructable

Whilst the setting layer to 'multiply' to make the white transparent in this case is probably all you need the below also works (though overkill in this case but useful for other texture work)

Double click on you black and white grid layer you have to open the layer Style dialogue

At the bottom you'll notive the Blend If: part of it with 2 sliders

If you hold ALT when you move a slider it will split and allow you to fine tune the blend more.

Really good for lots of texture work/blending.

Much better explanation here:

hope it helps

Ah... so that's where they hide the soft edges. Thanks, Andy.
