hello there, I recently had the chance to play around with Maya 4.5 and I'm starting to like the program. One of the things I have fallen for in particular is the duplicate object as instance. I find it superb, especially in the detailing stages to be able to make a real-time copy of the object I'm working on, so that I can edit on an object with vertexes and edges visible, while seeing the result on a clean object with no geometry obscuring the details. However, there is one thing I'm wondering about, if I start with a polygon object, then copy as instance, and then change the copy to a subdivision surface, the connection is lost. is there anyway to retain the connection, or more precisely, can I have the original as a normal polygon mesh, and the instance as a subdivision mesh? this would help modeling as it's alot easier to pick verts, edges in polygon mode than it is in subdivision.
now, it is possible to use polygon proxy mode on the original, and normal subdivision on the instance, but even in polygon proxy mode, the subdivision surface mesh obscures some of the geometry, and changing surface smoothness to hull unfortunately also affects the instance copy.
also, on another note, sometime when in proxy mode and I'm deleting an edge, I says something about not being able to do conversion to subdivision, and subsequently nothing happens on the subdivision mesh, is this a limitation of personal edition that I'm using, or is it something I'm missing in the workflow?
