If anyone could give me some advice, it would be highly appreciated.

I 'm currently working with a G4 dual 450 MHZ 1 Gig RAM and an ati rage card (the one that comes standard with) with OS 10.2.6. For 3D i'm mostly working with cinema 4D and learning maya.

When working with low-polycount projects, all is well but when the polygoncount starts to go up (eg. working on a detailed car model) the display speed in cinema 4d and especially maya becomes very slow and highly unpractical to work with.

so my questions are:

To have better display speed

-Is it enough for me to buy a better video card (eg NVidia Ti or ATI 9600) which is quite a lot cheaper than buying a new system.

-Or should I buy a new system alltogether?

I was thinking about the G4 dual 1.25 G4 1250 DP 256MBDDR/80G/Combo/ATI9000/64MB/ . But would the display speed and render speed increase with this system be significant enough to justify buying a new sytem?

Or should I skip the G4's alltogether and consider instead a single processor G5 (the dual G5 is still out of budget)?

Well if someone ever faced similar situations, could you post your thoughts or any advice? thanks

cheers

Yes, it will be very good for you to get a new display card - not to mention the cost factor. The dual 450 is a great machine, if you put a new card in there it's going to feel like a new computer for your realtime interaction.

If you're on a tight budget I'd recommend waiting for the G5 systems to flesh out a bit. Start saving now... :)

I would definitely wait for a G5 with OSX 10.3 which will hopefully support quadro cards.

Thanks for the replies. I posted the same questions in the cinema 4D forum, you can read some other replies there if it would interest you.

cheers

hey ysd,
If you are planning on getting a new computer, make sure you get at least 512 MB of ram or Maya might not function well. Memory is still pretty expensive these days so you might want to get the lowest amount and see how it does before investing a lot more money into.
